Liverpool's squad is fairly thin compared to some of their Premier League rivals.

Teams such as Chelsea actually have too many players among their ranks to even fit into the Premier League's registration rules whereas Liverpool went into the 2025-26 season with less players than they were allowed to.

In a way, this is good as it means that the squad is much more tight-knit but, if something such as an injury crisis occurs like it did this term, it leaves them rather short-handed.

That's one of the many reasons why the 2026-27 summer transfer window is expected to be a rather busy one for Liverpool.

But, in order for them to bring players in, some will have to be moved on and now, it seems like Richard Hughes has the perfect move lined up for one of the Reds' players.

Juventus still want to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Liverpool

Giorgi Mamardashvili got a lot more than he bargained for during the 2025-26 season.

The Georgian 'keeper likely expected to get a handful of games in the Carabao Cup and the odd appearance here and there in the Premier League.

But, thanks to Alisson's constant injuries, the 25-year-old played in 20 games for Liverpool across all competitions.

Most fans thought that Liverpool would still be solid with Mamardashvili in between the sticks but, his performances proved that he's not ready to be the Reds' number one yet.

This realisation stopped the transfer of Alisson to Juventus and forced the Old Lady into looking at Mamardashvili as a potential option.

Rumours about the future of the Georgian had died down over the last month or so but now, in a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, it seems like he's still in the back of their minds as a potential target.

"Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, who's set to leave Napoli after just twelve months, is also on their radar," they wrote.

"It's no coincidence that Aurelio De Laurentiis's club is also considering Vicario as the Serbian's replacement.

"The former Granata player has plenty of personality, is a penalty-taker specialist, and, above all, is very good with his feet: not a minor detail in Spalletti's game.

"In the background remain the various Oblak (Atletico Madrid) and Mamardashvili, Alisson's assistant at Liverpool."

Why Giorgi Mamardashvili joining Juventus makes total sense

Liverpool may see Mamardashvili as their next Alisson but, at the moment, it's clear he's not there yet.

His distribution is miles away from where it needs to be and, when he was playing for Valencia he was known for his shot-stopping, that same player hasn't emerged at Anfield yet.

He only played 20 games across all competitions for the Anfield outfit this season and he managed to concede 34 goals while only keeping three clean sheets.

If Caoimhin Kelleher was still at the club, he'd almost certainly be in line to be the Reds' first-choice next season.

But, since his contract was set to expire in June 2026 and he was fed up of being second-choice, Liverpool let him leave for nothing.

And, now that the Reds are stuck with Mamardashvili, they need to make the most of the situation and boost his confidence.

But, since Alisson has just extended his stay, he's unlikely to get the regular game time he needs to improve which is why a season-long loan to Juventus could be the play.

Indeed, a permanent deal could also be a good move as, of all the positions in their squad, Liverpool have pretty decent depth in their goalkeeping position with Freddie Woodman, Armin Pecsi and Vitezslav Jaros all ready and waiting to enter the Reds' plans.
