Arne Slot set to DROP summer signing for Nottingham Forest clash

Liverpool added £450m worth of talent to their Premier League title-winning squad over the summer transfer window.

Sporting director Richard Hughes brought in the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz on British record deals - while Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Giorgi Mamardashvili were also brought to Anfield.

It was expected that the Reds would go on to lift the Premier League title a second time in succession - especially after winning their opening five top-flight games of the season.

But adding so many players at once appears to have had a destabilising effect on Arne Slot’s side - and recently he has begun to recreate his 2024/25 title-winning team.

Mamardashvili out, Alisson in

This weekend the club are back in action after the international window - and it looks like Slot is going to drop yet another new signing from his starting XI.

Mamardashvili, 25, joined the club from Valencia having spent last season on loan with the Spanish giants. The Georgian goalkeeper cost an initial £24m - rising to £29m - but had to initially settle for a backup role to Alisson Becker.

But Alisson’s injury against Galatasaray in the Champions League opened the door to Mamardashvili - who has stepped up in recent weeks.

Alisson however is due to return to full training this week with the Anfield club taking on Nottingham Forest this weekend. If he manages to get through these sessions then Slot will surely be left with no other option than to get him back in goal.

Alisson is LFC's No1

Liverpool have lost seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions and have missed Alisson of late. Mamardashvili has lost four of his five Premier League matches; his only victory and clean sheet came in a routine 2-0 win against Aston Villa on November 1.

The Georgia international has conceded TEN goals across the other four top-flight appearances he’s made. That’s not to say Mamardashvili has done badly - but there is little doubt that 33-year-old Alisson will remain Slot’s No1.

The Brazil shot-stopper has been absent since the closing stages of September and no doubt will be welcomed back with open arms by Liverpool fans. Under contract until 2027, Alisson has declared a preference to one day move home to Internacional.

That may well open up the possibility for Mamardashvili to stake his claim as No1 but expect Alisson to regain his starting berth as soon as he’s back fit.
