The five changes Arne Slot needs to make for Wolves on Friday

Liverpool slumped to defeat at the Premier League’s bottom side Wolves on Tuesday night.

Andre’s late winner condemned the Reds in added time - causing severe damage to Arne Slot’s chase for Champions League football. Rob Edwards’ side have been improving in recent weeks but this was still only their third win of the Premier League season.

The two sides square off again at Molineux on Friday night in the FA Cup.

Slot may opt to give his fringe men a chance to impress - while also using the cup tie as an opportunity to rest key personnel.

No doubt the Liverpool boss would love to add the FA Cup to the Premier League title he won last season. But even a shuffled deck should have enough to see off a Wolves’ side whose focus might well be elsewhere.

So what changes should Slot make?

Giorgi Mamardashvili for Alisson Becker

Recent reports suggest the Georgian is growing fed up at his bench role; he hasn’t made a start since the FA Cup third round against Barnsley.

It’s also a chance to change something at the back - with Alisson’s kicking once again coming under scrutiny in the past couple of

fixtures. If Liverpool are ever going to follow through on Richard Hughes’ plant to replace Alisson as No1 with Mamardashvili Arne Slot is going to have to use him more often.

Joe Gomez for Jeremie Frimpong

This one isn’t because we want to see Frimpong dropped. That will become clear further down. Liverpool’s right-back difficulties have been prevalent all season and Slot has had to work hard for solutions.

It’s a remote possibility that he gives Calvin Ramsay a start - although he did use the Scot against Brighton in the last round. More likely is that if a change is going to be made at right-back then Gomez will be the man to come in.

Trey Nyoni for Ryan Gravenberch

Gravenberch had a nightmare outing against Wolves in midweek. The 23-year-old continually lost duels and was booked in a horror 45-minute spell.

This season he hasn’t been the same player as he was during the Premier League title-winning campaign - which can be put down to a new role in midfield under Arne Slot.

The head coach can take his Dutch compatriot out of the firing line on Friday and use Trey Nyoni instead. The 18-year-old midfielder is highly thought-of inside the club but cannot seem to win Slot over decisively.

He’s managed fewer than 10 minutes of Premier League action overall - no starts of course. And in the FA Cup Nyoni has played twice - but only at the very end of matches.

Liverpool need to use him - or else they may risk losing him further down the line if no breakthrough can be made.

Rio Ngumoha for Cody Gakpo

This one feels obvious. Liverpool are crying out for some one-v-one quality and it’s become old news that fans are sick of Gakpo’s cut-inside moves.

Ngumoha was namechecked by Steven Gerrard on TNT Sports on Tuesday night - with the Reds’ legendary captain urging Slot to use him from the start.

There is a growing clamour for the 17-year-old to be given a role in the team. Slot has been at pains to point out that Rio was being used more often than other players his age. But now it’s time to give him the trust to run Wolves ragged on Friday.

Ngumoha started the third-round win over Barnsley and only came off the bench against Brighton. Please, Arne, give the fans what they want.

Jeremie Frimpong for Mo Salah

And speaking of one-v-one quality… The 25-year-old ranks very highly on FOTMOB for dribbles completed per 90 as well as successful dribbles percentage.

Frimpong is NOT a traditional right-back and in fact his strengths are better deployed further forward. He is capable of carrying the ball and driving into the box - creating chances for Hugo Ekitike and others.

By bringing Gomez into the defence it gives Slot the option of playing Frimpong at right-wing. That would mean dropping Salah out of the lineup - following a goalscoring performance versus Wolves - but it’s time for replacements to be sourced.
