Liverpool confirm offer made for club legend's son
Liverpool have made an offer to sign a club legend's son.
Over the years, Liverpool’s academy has developed a bit of a theme: the sons of former players coming through the system and trying to make their own mark at Anfield.
You only have to look at recent names like Jayden Danns, Lewis Koumas and Bobby Clark to see it in action. While they’re forging their own paths now, the connection to footballing families from the early 2000s era is hard to miss, especially with several of those surnames still familiar to English football fans.
And it doesn’t stop there. Djibril Cisse’s son is also progressing through the Liverpool ranks, adding another interesting layer to that ongoing trend.
Cisse himself remains a well-remembered figure at the club, despite a relatively short spell on Merseyside.
He was part of the Liverpool side that achieved European glory in Istanbul in 2005, a night that is still talked about as one of the club’s greatest ever moments. During his time at Anfield, he also delivered important contributions in domestic and European competitions, including a goal in the 2006 FA Cup final win over West Ham and a brace in the UEFA Super Cup final.
Even after his playing days at Liverpool ended, Cisse’s connection with the club has remained strong. He has featured in Liverpool legends matches alongside icons like Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, which has only reinforced his place in the club’s modern history.
Given that background, it feels fitting that his son is now coming through at the academy. It adds another thread to a growing pattern at Liverpool, where the next generation is increasingly carrying familiar names - and in some cases, continuing family legacies at Anfield.
His son, Prince Kobe Cisse plays for Liverpool's U18 side, as well as representing Wales at youth international level - he is eligible through his mother.
Like his father, Prince Kobe started out playing as a forward in Liverpool's ranks. He played that position at U16 level and also when he first came into the U18 side.
Only 17-years-old, last summer he underwent an interesting positional switch. Instead of scoring goals, Cisse's new job has become to prevent them.
During pre-season, the club trialled him as a centre-back and this has since become his new position at U18 level.
He's started all of the games as a centre-back in the U18 Premier League and has produced some solid performances due to his ability on the ball and his reading of the game last season.
This development is still in its early stages, but it looks like Liverpool are continuing to press ahead with Cisse becoming their new centre-back.
The last time such a notable change was made was when the Reds transitioned Trent Alexander-Arnold into a right-back after playing most of his career in central midfield.
This Cisse experiment reminds us of what the Reds did with the club's former no.66. For Alexander-Arnold that paid dividends giving him an easier route into the first team.
Could the same happen to Cisse?
With Ibrahima Konate's departure there will be a shortage of centre-backs at Anfield this summer. Competition will be fierce for Cisse having to compete alongside the likes of Mor Talla Ndiaye, Giovanni Leoni, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Jeremy Jacquet for a starting spot but pre-season could provide him with an opportunity to make his mark.
That is of course if he stays. His current deal has expired at Anfield but Liverpool confirmed they have made a contract offer to keep Cisse at the club.
Whether that will be accepted remains to be seen.
