Ibrahima Konate is now expected to leave Liverpool upon the expiry of his contract this summer.

Even though the Frenchman said that they were close to agreeing terms, that is clearly not the case.

News broke on Thursday evening that the two parties could come to an agreement and that the centre-back would be free to leave L4 this summer.

This clearly means that Liverpool will need to sign a new centre-back this summer, especially if Joe Gomez is also sent packing.

Indeed, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni will be available for Arne Slot to play but, it doesn't feel like either of them will be the Reds' next Konate.

Konstantinos Koulierakis could be available for a cut-rate fee

Konstantinos Koulierakis is a name that most Liverpool fans won't have heard of.

However, the centre-back, who was signed for £13 million by Wolfsburg back in 2024, has been making headlines.

Even though Wolfsburg were relegated, the Greece international was one of their best players with several clubs from around the world interested in acquiring his services.

Koulierakis is only 22 years old and, the fact that he's already made 20 appearances for the Greek national team proves how good he actually is.

He played 33 games across all competitions this term and, although he can only be used as a centre-back, his profile is exactly what Liverpool need.

Koulierakis has managed to score four goals this term and has even assisted his teammates once.

And, as mentioned, due to the Bundesliga outfit's relegation, this could mean that he's available for a cut-rate fee with Liverpool's interest well-documented.

Konstantinos Koulierakis' 2025-26 season in numbers

Koulierakis may only be six foot one but his defensive contribution is decent.

As per Fotmob, every 90 minutes the centre-back makes 1.41 tackles, 1.34 interceptions and wins 56.8 per cent of his aerial duels.

He's only dispossessed 0.18 times per game and only commits one foul per 90.

These numbers may not seem like the most inspiring, but, considering his team ended up being relegated from Germany's top flight, they're not all that bad.

The fact that he wouldn't cost Liverpool all that much to sign is also a major selling point as, with their own performance this term, there are several areas among their starting XI which need upgrading.

And, since over £450 million was spent by the Anfield outfit this term, they're going to have to pick and choose which players they want to sign and how much for.

But, if they do choose to sign Koulierakis, he could easily become Liverpool's next Konate.
