Arne Slot opens up on Liverpool future amid sack speculation

It’s been a testing second season in charge of Liverpool for head coach Arne Slot.

Appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement back in 2024 the Dutchman got off to the best possible start with a Premier League title win in his first season in charge.

But the situation is very different a year on from that title victory - with Liverpool in fifth place in the Premier League and well off the pace set by Manchester City.

Instead of a follow-up to their title win the Anfield club are just hoping to qualify for the Champions League next season - despite a mammoth £450m spend in the summer transfer window.

It’s all led to speculation that FSG might take the decision to move on from Slot - who is under contract on Merseyside until 2027.

Arne Slot is confident of staying

Richard Hughes and CEO of Football Michael Edwards are planning to sit down and audit the entire campaign in the off-season and that will go a long way to defining a way forward for the club.

And despite fans’ wishes to the contrary it now looks settled that Slot will be staying.

A new report in TEAMtalk claims the former Feyenoord boss is confident about his prospects of staying in charge. And the head coach is even plotting improvements to the squad which will see Liverpool back in contention for the title next season.

“Arne Slot is working under the firm belief that he will remain Liverpool manager this summer,” the report reads.

“He is already planning ahead with summer transfers and with a growing expectation that the side will push for top honours again next season.”

Arne Slot is planning a title charge

Liverpool have endured some poor spells this season but a recent collapse in Chelsea’s form has all but sealed a Champions League spot for the Reds.

The prospect of Xabi Alonso replacing Slot was lurking in the background for a while but it’s now emerging that FSG never had any plans to dispense with their title-winning boss.

“Liverpool have consistently maintained that no decision had ever been made to remove Slot from his position, despite strong links with former Reds icon Xabi Alonso,” the report reads.

“The club’s stance remains that a full end-of-season review will determine the direction of travel.”

Liverpool have a five-point buffer and a game in hand over sixth-place Brighton right now but club staff are keeping an eye on how the players react during the run in.

“The hierarchy are understood to be monitoring player reaction and how the squad continues to respond to Slot’s methods during this critical period,” the report reads.

“Those close to the 47-year-old insist he is “more than confident” he will be in charge next season and is already looking ahead to building a squad capable of mounting a serious Premier League title challenge in 2027.”

So ignore the speculation; Slot is here to stay.
