Arne Slot has let one summer signing down massively
Liverpool enjoyed a very busy transfer window last summer, laying the foundations for the next great team at Anfield.
The British transfer record was broken twice in the same window by the Premier League champions, with Florian Wirtz and then Alexander Isak both arriving for record fees.
It wasn’t just Arne Slot’s forward line that got a revamp though, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giovanni Leoni were all added to bolster Liverpool’s defence.
Another highly exciting talent, Giorgi Mamardashvili, also linked up with Slot’s side after a deal was agreed the previous summer to bring him to Anfield, but the Georgian shot stopper has barely featured for the Reds.
After sitting on the bench once again against Brighton on Saturday, Liverpool’s number two ‘keeper must seriously be questioning when his next start will come.
Mamardashvili overlooked once again by Slot
When the Georgian signed for Liverpool he will have known it would be very difficult to usurp Alisson Becker’s place in the team, with the Brazilian already established as one of the best ‘keepers in world football.
Nevertheless, the 25-year-old will have expected to receive several opportunities to earn his place in the team, but so far those opportunities have been lacking.
Mamardashvili has featured 11 times in all competitions for the Reds, and nine of those appearances came in a run from late September to early November when Alisson was injured.
The Georgian also made the team for Liverpool’s third round Carabao Cup tie against Southampton and the Reds’ opening FA Cup fixture against Barnsley.
The match against Barnsley is the only time Mamardashvili has featured since Liverpool’s number one returned from injury.
Does Mamardashvili have a long-term future at Anfield?
Many supporters were expecting Mamardashvili to be named in the starting XI for the Reds’ fourth round FA Cup tie against Brighton on Saturday, but Alisson retained his place in the team.
That selection decision will presumably set the precedent for the rest of the season, and it now looks like the only way the Georgian will get on the pitch is an injury to Alisson.
When Liverpool announced the £25 million signing of Mamardashvili, the ‘keeper was one of the most sought-after young players in his position and was viewed by many as the long-term heir to Alisson.
Now, less than a year into his career at Anfield, there are serious doubts over his future in Merseyside, and links to other ‘keepers such as Sunderland's Robin Roefs have emerged.
By not continuing to use Mamardashvili as Liverpool’s cup goalkeeper, Slot has let the 25-year-old down massively, and his place in the Reds’ long-term plans is questionable at best.
