Liverpool's performances throughout most of the 2025-26 season have been far from ideal.

Their campaign may have started off well but, over the last couple of months, the Anfield outfit have often been miles off the pace.

This has resulted in questions being asked about many different areas of the club such as their management and their recruitment.

Liverpool spent over £450 million in the summer and, despite this massive amount of spending, it still feels like there's areas of the Reds' first-team squad that needs upgrading.

Due to this, several players have been linked with an Anfield switch during the winter transfer window but, at the moment, no moves have been made by the club.

Richard Hughes will regret not signing Antoine Semenyo for Liverpool after what he did for Manchester City

One of the main players linked with a Liverpool move in January was Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo.

The attacker has been in impressive form since the 2025-26 season kicked off with several clubs from across the world interested in acquiring his services.

The Reds were one of the leading candidates for his transfer, but, in the end, it was Manchester City who fronted the money for the Ghanaian.

On the face of things, this may not seem like the end of the world but after what he did for the Cityzens during his debut, Richard Hughes could be about to face some tough questions.

Semenyo was once dubbed "extraordinary" by Pep Guardiola, and, on Saturday, he proved why.

He started City's FA Cup tie against Exeter City and he ended up chipping in with two goal contributions during their 10-1 win.

Liverpool have been in dire need for attacking reinforcement since the season kicked off and, since Semenyo would be classed as homegrown, he was the perfect candidate.

Indeed, his £65 million price tag was slightly steep but even with this in mind, since he's already contributed to 13 Premier League goals, he could've ended up being a steal.

Liverpool need to add some more talent to their ranks soon

Although Liverpool spent £450 million on new signings in the summer, it's clear that they still need to bring some more players in.

Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and even Florian Wirtz have all underperformed this season which has left the Reds in a bit of a sticky situation.

In fact, due to their poor form, calls for Arne Slot to be sacked have emerged with Hughes also likely to face many questions about why he chose to go for certain players over others.

However, if they don't get their act together and put some genuine things in place to add new talent to their ranks in the January or summer transfer window, they could be left behind by their rivals and end up even further away from teams such as Arsenal in the future.

Several players have cropped up as potential targets already and, even though they've already spent a lot of money this term, there's no reason why some deals can't be explored, especially with the recent form that they've been in.
