OUTSTANDING Liverpool midfielder is coming back

Liverpool declined to make any purchases in the midfield sector last summer.

That was despite sporting director Richard Hughes seeing fit to spend £450m overall on new players.

The toll was heavy on Arne Slot’s midfield options during the 2024/25 Premier League title win - and the workload has grown even more intense during the head coach’s second season in charge.

Out have gone the likes of Harvey Elliott and James McConnell on loan - while a permanent deal was concluded for Tyler Morton to go to Lyon.

Slot has also recently taken to starting FOUR of his five midfielders - meaning more game time for those selected.

Szoboszlai injured last weekend

All five midfielders have struggled with injury during the course of this campaign - with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Wataru missing matches before last weekend.

And late in the game against Brighton Slot’s worst fears were confirmed when talismanic midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was struck by an ankle injury.

Having played every minute for club and country so far this season - the Hungary captain is an integral figure for the Reds.

Szoboszlai on course to return this weekend

They cannot afford to do without the 25-year-old for long - but there appears to be good news on the horizon.

According to a report in the Athletic, Szoboszlai could make a return to the lineup for this weekend’s Premier League match away at Tottenham with a final decision to be made on his participation on Friday.

“Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is hoping to be passed fit for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur,” the report reads.

Szoboszlai could face one-game ban

“A scan subsequently allayed fears that he could be facing an extended spell on the sidelines and Szoboszlai, who has been Liverpool’s outstanding performer so far this season, has responded well to treatment in recent days.

“Liverpool will continue to monitor him closely before making a final decision on Friday whether he’s involved in the capital.

“If he is not risked then the expectation is that he will definitely be back for the visit of last-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers to Anfield on December 27.”

Szoboszlai is also one yellow card away from a suspension - and if he clocks up one more booking in the next three games then he will be looking at a one-game ban.
