A midfielder has been spotted at Liverpool, he is in advanced talks to join the club.

Liverpool’s midfield situation is starting to look increasingly volatile. Not because there is a complete lack of quality, but because the uncertainty surrounding Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones leaves Liverpool potentially needing to replace two important players from a department that already looks light.

Jones is the clearest example. Inter Milan have been strongly linked with the midfielder, with the Italian club having already made approaches for him this summer. Liverpool have rejected those bids so far, while Andoni Iraola has made it clear he would like to keep Jones.

But the fact his future is still being discussed at this stage of the window tells you there is genuine uncertainty.

Mac Allister's situation is arguably even more interesting. Real Madrid have long admired the Argentina international, while Atletico Madrid have also been credited with an interest. Now Manchester City have reportedly registered their interest too, adding another Premier League rival to the list of clubs keeping tabs on him.

Losing either player would be a significant blow.

Losing both would leave Liverpool with a serious problem.

And that is because the midfield already feels short of what Iraola needs before you even consider potential departures.

Ryan Gravenberch remains an important part of the plans and Dominik Szoboszlai has shown his versatility, but there is still a glaring hole in the squad.

Liverpool need a proper No.6.

It is a position they have never really replaced since Fabinho left the club three years ago. There have been attempts to fill the void and different players have been asked to perform the role, but Liverpool still don't have that specialist defensive midfielder who can sit in front of the defence, dictate the tempo and provide the security required behind a high-intensity team.

That becomes even more important under Iraola.

Trey Nyoni has certainly given Liverpool something to think about during pre-season. The teenager has stepped up impressively and looks increasingly ready to contribute to the first team. There is a growing feeling that he could have a significant role to play this season.

But Liverpool cannot look at Nyoni's emergence and decide the midfield is sorted.

He is still a teenager.

Asking him to suddenly become the answer to Liverpool's midfield problems, particularly if Jones and Mac Allister both leave, would be an enormous burden. Nyoni should be allowed to develop naturally rather than being relied upon to rescue a department that needs strengthening.

Liverpool therefore need to be careful.

If Jones stays and Mac Allister stays, there is still an argument that another midfielder is required, particularly a specialist No.6.

If one leaves, another midfielder becomes essential.

If both leave, Liverpool are looking at a complete midfield rebuild. That is probably unlikely to happen this month, but a possibility in the next twelve to 18 months.

In between Liverpool are making moves to sign another midfielder. Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that the Reds are in advanced talks to sign Patrik Farkas as a free agent.

The Hungarian U18 international is the older brother of Erik Farkas, and he plays as a midfielder.

While, he has been in talks with the Reds he has been participating in the club's U21 games, and he was spotted in the background of one of the images Liverpool released from their latest game at the U21 AXA centre.

It was highlighted in this tweet here.

That's a strong indication that the talks are advancing as hoped and Farkas will hopefully be completing a move to Anfield becoming the fifth Hungarian contracted to the club after his younger brother, Armin Pecsi, Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai.
