An incredible midfielder has confirmed he is going to be Liverpool's next superstar.

Liverpool's transfer window has been an underwhelming one so far. Despite several clear weaknesses in the squad that need addressing before the new season, progress has been slower than many supporters expected.

Andoni Iraola made that point himself during his first press conference. The new head coach admitted Liverpool still require reinforcements and stressed that work is continuing behind the scenes to strengthen the squad. Those comments provided some reassurance, but there has been little tangible progress since.

Victor Munoz remains the only significant arrival, while much of the transfer news surrounding Anfield has been disappointing.

The biggest blow came in Liverpool's pursuit of Yan Diomande. The highly-rated winger rejected a move to Merseyside in favour of Paris Saint-Germain before eventually completing a transfer to Real Madrid, leaving the Reds back at square one in their search for attacking reinforcements. Meanwhile, Michael Edwards' resignation has created further uncertainty around the club's recruitment structure at a time when stability is badly needed.

It is a far from ideal opening to what many expected would be a defining summer for Liverpool.

That has inevitably shifted attention towards Bradley Barcola.

The Frenchman has emerged as one of the club's leading alternatives to Diomande, and it is easy to understand why.

His pace, directness and ability to beat defenders one-on-one are qualities Liverpool currently lack, making him one of the most compelling options still on the market.

The difficulty for Liverpool is that any move for Barcola appears to depend almost entirely on what Paris Saint-Germain do next.

Having missed out on Yan Diomande, the Ligue 1 champions are expected to prioritise signing another attacking player before entertaining any offers for Barcola. Until that happens, Liverpool have little influence over the situation and are effectively left waiting for the dominoes to fall elsewhere.

It is a scenario that has become frustratingly familiar for supporters.

There is still confidence that Liverpool will strengthen before the deadline, but the momentum of the window has been shaped more by missed opportunities than completed deals. Understandably, that has left many fans fearing another setback rather than anticipating a breakthrough.

Even then, signing a winger would only solve part of the problem.

Liverpool's need for reinforcements extends well beyond the forward line. Midfield and defence remain areas of genuine concern, and both require significant investment if Andoni Iraola is to have a squad capable of implementing his ideas from the opening day of the season.

The midfield, in particular, illustrates the scale of the challenge.

Curtis Jones' future remains uncertain amid continued speculation over a potential exit, while Alexis Mac Allister's contract situation continues to raise questions about his long-term future.

Even if both remain at Anfield, there is still a strong argument that Liverpool need midfielders whose profiles are a closer fit for Iraola's style of play.

Iraola's teams are built around intensity. His midfielders are expected to press aggressively, recover possession quickly and repeatedly cover large areas of the pitch, all while moving the ball forward at speed. Liverpool are not short of technical quality, but they could benefit from adding greater athleticism and dynamism to ensure the midfield can consistently meet the physical and tactical demands of the new manager's system.

Of course, not every recent addition has to be a signing. Liverpool are currently on pre-season tour and there are plenty of young players linking up with Iraola on this tour, who are hoping to showcase their talent.

Undoubtedly the best player on the tour so far has been Trey Nyoni. The 19-year-old created the most chances (3) and won the most tackles (3) out of anyone on the pitch during a brilliant 45-minute display that saw Liverpool score three goals against Sunderland.

Then he completed the most passes (59) and the most passes into the final third (8) against Wrexham.

Nyoni's ability to move the ball quickly and consistently play progressive, line-breaking passes makes him an ideal fit for Andoni Iraola's style of football.

The teenager has long been regarded as one of Liverpool's brightest academy prospects, but his display against Sunderland suggested he is ready to make a genuine impact at first-team level. Rather than looking overawed, he played with the confidence, composure and intelligence of an experienced midfielder.

If he continues to develop at this rate and translates these performances into regular Premier League football, Liverpool could have something very special on their hands. He possesses all the attributes to become one of the standout midfielders of his generation, combining technical quality with the speed of thought and intensity that Iraola demands.

Against Sunderland, Nyoni offered another reminder of just how high his ceiling really is.
