Chelsea set £40m Liverpool transfer in motion
Liverpool might end up thanking Chelsea if a £40m transfer comes to fruition. The Blues have set things in motion.
Liverpool have done an awful lot of business in this transfer window and more is to come. They’ve broken their transfer record, of course, by signing Florian Wirtz and intend to do so again if Newcastle United will let them.
They’re playing hardball over Alexander Isak and while it’s unclear if that deal will go through, the Reds will continue to try. It could even cost £150m in the end.

And that’s to go along with the Wirtz fee. And the massive amount spent on Hugo Ekitike and the record arrivals at both full-back positions. It’s an unbelievable spend and ambition on a scale we’ve never seen at Anfield.
There have been sales, too. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Luis Diaz have all left, bringing in well over £100m.
Liverpool won’t stop there with the outgoings, though. And Chelsea might help them get another done.
Harvey Elliott's future
Harvey Elliott's future is incredibly uncertain right now. The playmaker barely featured last season, prompting all sorts of speculation that he was moving on.
Elliott's appearance on Monday against Athletic Bilbao further fuelled that speculation. His exit from the pitch saw him blow kisses to crowd, applauding all four corners of Anfield in what certainly looked like a final bow.
And yet, there isn't a strong link to anyone. Teams have been linked but no one has made their move - but that might be about to change.
Sky Germany's Philipp Hinze reports that RB Leipzig are interested in Elliott and may make a bid. That bid will only arrive if Xavi Simons leaves, however.
"Still a topic at RB Leipzig: Harvey Elliott," he wrote on Twitter. "Financially, it’s still difficult to pull off.
"It also depends on a possible departure of Xavi. Elliott remains on Leipzig’s list. A tough deal to make. Progress depends on various factors. Leipzig with outsider chances as reported."
Now, Simons almost certainly does leave and Chelsea are making sure of that. Per Fabrizio Romano, they're in advanced talks with Leipzig about a move and the player wants it to happen.
Per Talksport, Liverpool want at least £40m for Elliott and Leipzig might be able to afford something in that region if Simons leaves. It certainly sounds as though they'll try.
Chelsea, then, are set to trigger an offer and potentially a £40m deal for Liverpool here.
