Talks opened with Real Madrid over Liverpool starter
Liverpool are facing a contract conundrum over Ibrahima Konate.
The Frenchman is out of contract in summer 2026 - and if no new deal is agreed then he will be leaving for free.
It’s been suggested that club sporting director Richard Hughes has been trying to get a renewal over the line for the last year or so - but still no breakthrough has been made.
Liverpool centre-back problems stacking up
The Premier League champions are suffering in the centre-back area - with injuries reported to Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni - and the cost of missing out on Marc Guehi on deadline day remains high.
Liverpool would dearly love to sign up the 26-year-old Konate for the long term - and prevent a title-winning defender walking out of the door for nothing.

And while hopes were growing in recent weeks that an accord could be struck - it now appears there is a new threat to Liverpool’s renewal for Konate.
'Intermediaries' in Konate - Madrid talks
TEAMtalk is reporting that talks are now once again on with Real Madrid in an attempt to convince the Spanish capital club to reignite their interest.
Madrid were firmly established in the hunt for Konate previously but made it known a few weeks ago that they had dropped out of the running.
“Intermediaries have still been working in the background to try to draw Madrid back into the picture,” the report reads.
Konate free to talk to Madrid in January
It’s previously been described as Konate’s dream move to arrive at the Bernabeu - but Liverpool will have to try to resist all attempts to prise him away.
The France star will be entitled to speak to potentially interested overseas clubs in just a matter of days when the calendar turns over to January.
That leaves precious little time for Richard Hughes to get a deal over the line before Madrid come sniffing around.
