Richard Hughes gets green light to pursue £35m left-back deal

Liverpool will have to deal with some uncertainty in the left-back spot over the coming months.

Andy Robertson was the team’s long-term left-back incumbent - signing from Hull for £8m back in 2017. But during the 2024/25 Premier League title-winning season the Scotland captain was beneath his best.

Uncharacteristic errors slipped into the 31-year-old’s game - and left-back was identified as a position of priority for last summer’s transfer window.

Milos Kerkez was acquired for £40m from Bournemouth - relegating Robbo to an unfamiliar bench role. With a contract expiring in summer 2026 it is expected that Robertson will depart at the end of the season - opening up a gap in the squad.

The left-sider was linked with a January move to Tottenham but ultimately stayed put as Liverpool were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his Roma loan.

But the Greek too is under threat - due to return to Anfield at the end of the season with only a year left on his contract.

With Robertson set to move on - perhaps to Celtic - once his contract expires and Tsimikas looking certain to be sold - it opens the door to a Liverpool left-back deal.

“If Andy Robertson doesn't sign a new deal and Kostas Tsimikas opts to pursue an exit, that leaves Liverpool in need of a left-back,” writes Ian Doyle in the Liverpool Echo.

And this week one name emerged into sudden focus. Daniel Svensson, 24, has been a revelation since signing for Borussia Dortmund from Nordsjælland initially on loan in winter 2024.

The Sweden international signed a permanent contract last summer - inking a deal until 2029.

A report earlier this week suggested that BVB were prepared to sanction a move worth up to £35m for Svensson with the Premier League described as his dream destination.

Liverpool were mentioned as suitors in the report - along with several other clubs - with club recruiters blown away by the Swede’s physicality and pressing game.

Dortmund have been playing a three-man defensive system with Svensson further ahead as a wing-back but he can also play in a range of other positions.

For the national team he has played as an orthodox left-back as well as a defensive midfielder. So for their money Liverpool would simply be signing an alternative to Kerkez - they would also be getting cover in the vital midfield area.

Tsimikas and Robertson leaving would free up plenty of money in the wage budget too - and right now it looks like Richard Hughes has got the green light to pursue the Svensson move.
