Although it would be nice, Salah’s time as the Reds’ talisman can’t and won’t last forever, and this is something Richard Hughes is all too aware of.

Next season’s Liverpool side will definitely feature the 32-year-old, and he could remain at Anfield for a long time after, but there will come a day when it is time to say goodbye.

According to a recent report, this is something that Liverpool are already planning for, and this summer the wheels will be put in motion to eventually replace Salah.

Liverpool still planning for life after Salah

Football Insider are reporting that, despite the ink not yet being dry on his new deal, plans are already being put in place to eventually replace Mo Salah.

The report claims that succession planning is on the agenda at Anfield, and that the club would ideally like to have Salah’s replacement in the squad before the Egyptian’s time in Merseyside is up.

A data-led approach, making futureproof signings is reportedly the direction Liverpool will take, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens and Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo being named in the report.

The Reds were almost left in a dire position this summer. The club’s best player could have left for free with no clear heir in place to step up in his absence and that is clearly a situation that Hughes wants to avoid being put in again.

Salah’s Liverpool future

If Salah, who will be 33 by the start of next season, can even come close to replicating his numbers from this campaign for the next few years then Liverpool will have plenty of time to find a replacement.

Another contract following on from his new two-year deal hasn’t been ruled out and it is easy to assume that Liverpool will want to keep the forward at the club for as long as he can continue to perform at the very top level.

Nothing is guaranteed in football, however. Salah’s performance levels could drop in the next year and then the Reds will be in a situation where a replacement is needed sooner rather than later.

It makes perfect sense therefore that Hughes is looking to recruit Salah’s successor as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition when the Egyptian King does finally end his time in Merseyside.
