Liverpool spent around £450m in last summer’s transfer window. A large chunk of that money was spent on new attackers - with sporting director Richard Hughes twice breaking the British transfer record.

We saw Florian Wirtz arrive for a fee that could reach £116m while Alexander Isak came in from Newcastle for £125m.

Hugo Ektike was added on an initial £69m deal and has been the pick of the bunch so far. In truth we are waiting for Arne Slot’s new-look attack to truly click - with players either settling in like Wirtz and Isak - or else out of form.

Much was expected from Mohamed Salah following his 29-goal season as the Reds won the Premier League title last season but right now the 33-year-old is beneath his best.

Salah out of contract in 2027

Hughes set aside a considerable outlay for Salah’s new contract before the end of last season - worth around £400k per week until 2027.

That deal will take Salah up to his 35th birthday - but the indications may be that he is already on the wane.

Therefore there is the possibility that Liverpool decide to offload Salah next summer - when he will surely have interest from Saudi Arabia’s leading lights once again.

According to a new report in Rousing the Kop, a move for the Egyptian King away from Anfield might be best for all concerned.

Liverpool's Salah succession plan

“They are planning for his succession, whether it’s next year or the year after that,” the report reads.

“I don’t think it’s a real worry. Even if he was playing brilliantly there would be a chance of him going next summer. I don’t think it’s form related, I think they’ll assess it.

“He’s on a two-year deal, so it’s a short-term thing anyway.

“There’s never an easy or right time to move on from these world-class players.

“A sale next summer might suit all parties, even if he was the best player in the Premier League right now I don’t think you could rule him out of leaving next summer.

“They’ve just spent the best part of £300m on Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. That’s more than a quarter of a billion pounds on three forwards. We’ve started end game for Salah, this is either the penultimate season or the last one.”

Salah's replacement could be Olise

It has been described as Liverpool’s priority in the summer transfer window to move on from Salah with the signing of €100m-rated Michael Olise of Bayern Munich.

The 23-year-old France international is under contract at the Allianz Arena until 2029 - but has been tipped for a Premier League return one day.

He transferred to the Bundesliga champions from Crystal Palace in summer 2024 for around £53m - but would go for a lot more next summer.

Liverpool will be right there for his signature should the opportunity arise - with Salah potentially making way for the silky playmaker.
