Liverpool are facing plenty of disruption in the centre-back department during this off-season. The club have lost Jarell Quansah in a £30m+ deal to Bayer Leverkusen while Ibrahima Konate could end up leaving if no new contract is agreed soon.

Therefore links to incoming defenders make sense in the current climate. And Liverpool appear to have a type in mind for central defensive reinforcements over the past couple of windows.

There was a failed attempt to sign Leny Yoro last summer from Lille while this year we have seen links to Dean Huijsen and Giovanni Leoni among others.

The Reds’ decision-makers - including sporting director Richard Hughes - are targetting young centre-backs with room for improvement.

Liverpool want a young centre-back

Perhaps Marc Guehi is the exception to this rule as an established Premier League captain. Because if Konate ends up leaving then Liverpool will require a new, starting centre-back who can step into the breach.

One more defender who certainly fits the mould as a promising young centre-back is Konstantinos Koulierakis. The 21-year-old moved from PAOK in his native Greece to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga last summer.

Since then, the central defender has established himself in the German top flight and he is back on the menu at Anfield.

Liverpool 'desire' Koulierakis

That’s according to the latest report from Liverpool insider David Lynch, who claims that Koulierakis along with Parma starlet Leoni is being assessed.

“The desire to add a young centre-back with room to grow is obvious, and is why the likes of Parma’s Giovanni Leoni and Wolfsburg’s Konstantinos Koulierakis have been watched,” he writes on his Substack.

It’s not the first time Koulierakis has been linked with Liverpool. Back in spring, Anfieldwatch reported that he was very much in the thoughts of Liverpool’s recruitment team.

Koulierakis is 'unstoppable'

Previous reports have valued the player at £41m with his Wolfsburg contract extending until 2029.

In an interview with Anfield Watch, Koulierakis’ former coach at the PAOK academy, Alexiadis Alexandros, said: “At the first year, he was among the three top talents in his age group.

“From the moment he moved in the U17 and changed his position, he has been unstoppable up until now.”

The left-footed defender has played 14 times for the Greece first team and looks set for a career at the highest level before long.
