Liverpool look to be on the brink of another deal after Fabrizio Romano confirmed an agreement between two clubs. The deadline approaches fast, though.

There was a transfer surprise on Thursday night as Tottenham Hotspur struck a deal with RB Leipzig for Xavi Simons. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the story as a very late one.

Spurs will pay around €60m for Simons, who has encouraged the offer. Things should now move quickly and the Dutch playmaker appears destined for Tottenham.

And that’s a surprise. Chelsea have been consistently linked with Simons for the entire window, with talks about a deal thought to be progressing reasonably well.

But then things hit a problem as Chelsea couldn’t actually afford Simons. They hoped Leipzig were open to taking a player in exchange - maybe multiple - while some sales could have freed the cash.

Tottenham have jumped in to steal the player out from under the Blues, though. And that carries significant implications for Liverpool.

Harvey Elliott to RB Leipzig?

Chelsea's inability to seal a deal for Simons was, in our view, something of a favour to Liverpool. It meant Leipzig weren't in the market for a replacement.

Because their pick as a replacement appears to be Harvey Elliott. Elliott is up for the move, too, after struggling for minutes last season.

Ben Jacobs is one connecting the dots here, suggesting an offer may now be imminent as the Simons deal looks set to go through. That forces Liverpool into a difficult spot as they're not exactly eager to sell.

Jacobs stresses that, saying the Reds would be more open to selling if Alexander Isak joined or if Leipzig made a significant offer that they couldn't say no to.

Now, the latter feels very unlikely as Leipzig don't throw that kind of money around. The former? Well, there does appear to be some movement there.

Dominoes are falling, then. Isak could be on his way to Anfield, opening the door for Elliott to depart. Simons looks set to join Spurs, allowing Leipzig to walk through that door with enough money to get a deal done.
