Fabrizio Romano confirms what Liverpool will do if their move for Alexander Isak falls through. It’s a big one.

Liverpool would absolutely love to sign Alexander Isak. The Swede is their top target and has been all year long.

However, this is an incredibly difficult deal to get done. Newcastle United do not want to sell the player and Isak is busy trying to force his way out.

That’s the only way this gets over the line, essentially. Everyone seems to be aware of it, too, and Isak’s lack of playing time in pre-season certainly suggests he could move.

But there remains the case where Liverpool fail to sign Isak and he remains at Newcastle. It’s a very real possibility, in fact, and the Magpies’ failure to sign a suitable replacement increases the chances of him staying.

And so, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool do have a backup plan.

Romano gave an update on his YouTube channel late on Saturday where he discussed Liverpool's plan. If Isak isn't on his way to Merseyside, they'll push for Bradley Barcola.

“Liverpool maintain their focus on Alexander Isak because we know this appreciation for Barcola," he said. "We know this story about Barcola.

"I told you in the past few days if they can’t get Isak, Barcola will be the top target for Liverpool. But at the moment their focus remains at least this week — we will see what happens next week — but this week their focus remains on Isak.

"They like Barcola. They appreciate Barcola. Who doesn’t? One of the best wingers in the world.”

Now, we do believe Liverpool will sign Isak. Barcola, however, would be a fantastic alternative and one who gives Arne Slot what he wants in attack.

And so he is one to watch for the remainder of this window, even if there's still only a remote chance of it happening. But you never know.

Maybe the Frenchman is the superstar signing we're waiting for. Or it's simply Isak.
