Not every transfer works out. Liverpool success rate as of late has been particularly high, but mistakes happen from time to time and rectifying the situation can be a tough endeavour.

Darwin Nunez, for example, has given the fans a rollercoaster of emotions throughout his time with the club and now that his future with Liverpool is essentially over, we will need to move him on.

While still just 25 years old, there is enough of a track record for clubs to consider taking a punt on him if the transfer fee is right. Across 264 career games, he has 152 goal contributions. His talent is clear, even if he doesn't deliver when he is expected to all of the time. Clubs might take punt on him.

But given the £85m spent on him - which actually only ended up being £77.7m - and the rejected £70m bid from Al Hilal in January, the Reds will have to weigh up what they would be okay losing.

Would a £20m sacrifice be something Liverpool could get over?

According to Corriere dello Sport, the intel at AC Milan and Napoli is that Liverpool could be willing to let Nunez go for €60m (£51m), which would be £20m short of the offer that came from Saudi Arabia.

Furthermore, it is said that Al Hilal are still interested in Nunez and the Uruguayan is open to approaches from both Europe and elsewhere, after an unsuccessful spell on Merseyside.

Whether an approach from the Middle East would be closer to the £70m that was initially offered is unknown, and a variety of different options are still being considered by both Liverpool and Nunez.

Napoli, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan are all said to have been interested in him and so the right move for the player will need to be meticulously chosen. The environment he plays in is essential for him.

Although in business terms, the club that offers the most and reduces the financial damage that is inflicted on the Reds is going to be Liverpool's priority. An overall £27m loss would be painful.

Initially, Nunez's preference was to remain in Europe, although his mind has been opened to other endeavours now, and so a Saudi move - that would guarantee more money - is a distinct possibility.

As such, this move from AC Milan might well be short of the mark. Liverpool will be keeping a close eye on all of the interest in him, as his financial return will help the club to fund his replacement.

But it does seem as though a loss on Nunez is going to be inevitable. The price tag put on his head back in 2022 was a bold move and despite everyone's best wishes, it hasn't worked out.
