Liverpool will soon have a contract situation to solve over Alexis Mac Allister.

The 27-year-old is out of contract in 2028 - and right now it appears Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are in the queue ahead of him for a new deal.

The Argentina World Cup winner has long been a target for Real Madrid - and now there is a growing feeling at the Bernabeu that a move for the No10 is possible.

That’s according to a report in TEAMtalk - which claims Mac Allister is seen as Madrid’s successor to Luka Modric who left the club last summer.

“Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister is emerging as one of Real Madrid’s preferred options for midfield,” the report reads.

“Within Real Madrid’s recruitment department, there is a growing consensus that Mac Allister is the ideal fit to inherit Modric’s mantle. The feeling around a prospective move to Madrid is that it can be done.”

Alexis Mac Allister: Situation summary

Alexis Mac Allister sits in that sweet spot for Liverpool: central to the project, but close enough to contract “decision time” for conversations to be active behind the scenes.

He joined from Brighton in 2023 for around £35m and signed a five‑year deal to 2028, on wages reported at about £150,000 per week plus bonuses.

That gives Liverpool firm control for at least two more summers, with no release clause in his Anfield contract despite past reports of a €70m mechanism.

On the pitch, Mac Allister has become a go‑to starter under Arne Slot, shifting between deeper and advanced roles in a more possession‑heavy midfield and regarded as one of the technical reference points in the side.

The noise now is around his next step: there has been external speculation about Real Madrid and even Manchester United, but his camp have publicly stressed he is focused on Liverpool while waiting to see what kind of extension is put on the table.

For the club, the choice is simple: either tie him down on improved terms soon, or accept that his peak‑market decision probably arrives by 2027 at the latest.

Analysis

This summer could be a crunch time for Richard Hughes to make a decision over Mac Allister. He has suffered some indifferent form this season - and arguably began to tail off as far back as the closing stages of the 2024/25 Premier League title-winning campaign.

A good bid from Madrid could well test Liverpool’s resolve - and the proceeds put towards sourcing a younger replacement.

Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson - two England midfielders - have been mentioned as Reds’ targets while Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid is also thought to be of interest.
