Liverpool have their eyes on a £70m midfielder. And it's exactly who we dreamed it would be.

Liverpool have worked hard this summer to revitalise their squad. That's despite their squad being Premier League champions, of course.

But this was never a squad built with Arne Slot in mind - it was for Jürgen Klopp. The fact the Dutchman won the title with it in his debut campaign is ridiculous, honestly.

It certainly earned him Liverpool's faith and they set about getting him the players he wants this summer.

The defence is new, with record signings at each full-back position. Giovanni Leoni arrives as the future at centre-back, too, while they're still hoping to add Marc Guehi.

The attack has seen Darwnin Nunez and Luis Diaz sold off for massive amounts. In there place comes Hugo Ekitiké and Florian Wirtz - different types of attacking players who should really change how this team operates going forward.

What Liverpool haven't done, though, is change the midfield. It's a bit surprising, given that was the one area they did try to fix in 2024.

The failed pursuit of Martin Zubimendi brought no alternative and here we are a year later, still without one. Liverpool are going to get around to that, however - and they even have a player in mind.

Adam Wharton is the one

AS have reported on Real Madrid's interest in Adam Wharton. They claim Crystal Palace would want £70m in order to sell the midfielder and Los Blancos are considering things.

But they're not the only ones. Every top English club is also looking at Wharton, apparently, and that's music to our ears.

We're huge fans of what Wharton does and have touted him as a brilliant Liverpool signing for a while now.

He is, after all, a fantastic midfield playmaker and exactly the kind of player Liverpool want in the middle. Wharton is confident in possession, consistent with the ball and capable of slicing teams open - as the Reds saw for themselves at the Community Shield.

The 21-year-old is progressive with the ball above all, registering over seven such passes per 90 minutes last season. The only Liverpool player to meet that mark last season (and to have played at least 900 minutes) was Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And that's why we feel there's a particular need for Wharton. Not only is he young enough to be the future of a team's midfield but he provides what Liverpool last this summer.

He's a young, homegrown talent who fills a void in the squad. Honestly, we're thrilled that Liverpool are trying to get something done.
