The signing of Florian Wirtz has had a knock-on effect for Liverpool’s midfield.

Previously the three central midfield positions were more or less locked in - with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai all featuring.

But Wirtz looks destined to occupy the No10 position instead of Szoboszlai - meaning there is one less midfield position available.

Owing to injuries at right-back and an occasional experiment of using Wirtz from the left, everyone has been kept relatively happy thus far.

Real Madrid want Alexis

Down the line however it looks certain that one of Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning trio in the middle will lose out.

And right now Mac Allister is the most likely candidate. Gravenberch is immovable at No6 while Szoboszlai is arguably the Anfield club’s player of the season thus far.

Macca, 26, has been struggling for consistency since the tail end of last season and has yet to complete any of his Premier League outings this term.

Alexis Mac Allister to Real Madrid 'on track'

Accordingly it has been speculated that sporting director Richard Hughes may entertain transfer talk for the 2022 Argentina World Cup winner and Real Madrid are known to be keen.

The problem for the 15-time European champions is the price. Liverpool won’t let such a prominent member of their team leave on the cheap - especially not one who is contracted until 2028.

Mac Allister would command £100m in this kind of market and that is not a sum Madrid would entertain.

However a report for Real Madrid Exclusivo suggests that the signing of the South American schemer is currently “on track” for the Spanish capital club.

Mac Allister 'getting closer' to Madrid

“Mac Allister is getting closer to Real Madrid,” a report reads. “Real Madrid is keeping an eye on Alexis Mac Allister's current situation at Liverpool.”

The report acknowledges that the contract situation is not promising from a Madrid perspective but if his indifferent season continues they could be ready to test Liverpool’s resolve in summer 2026.

“If the season continues along these lines, it's likely that the Chamartín club will consider making the move.”

That in turn would present an intriguing scenario for Hughes and head coach Arne Slot. No doubt Mac Allister will want a new, improved contract before 2028 and if Liverpool want to keep him around long term then it makes sense to sign him up.

But on his current trajectory, would a new deal be advisable? That is the conundrum that Liverpool’s key decision-makers will need to weigh up carefully. And if they conclude that Mac Allister isn’t worth it then speaking to Madrid might NOT be the worst idea.
