Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group enticed former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards back to the organisation 15 months ago.

A key part of their pitch was the implementation of a so-called “multi-club” ownership model. With Chelsea and Manchester City launching empires of their own across Europe and beyond, it was reckoned that Liverpool were in danger of standing still.

And so Edwards was convinced; returning to FSG as CEO of Football having left the Reds back in 2022.

It’s fair to say the multi-club model hasn’t quite got off the ground for FSG. Links to French teams Toulouse and Bordeaux ultimately came to nothing.

There was also speculation that Malaga and Brazil’s Vasco da Gama could be added to the mix.

FSG have got Getafe in their sights

The attraction of the model is obvious. Depending on the location, players could be signed initially to the sister club or else sent out on loan if they are not quite ready for Premier League football.

It’s a strategy utilised by not only City and Chelsea - but also the Red Bull Group in Germany, Austria and beyond. And FSG might finally have alighted on the ideal partner club for the arrangement.

According to a new report on Marca, LaLiga mainstays Getafe are now the Americans’ top target for acquisition.

Based just outside the Spanish capital Madrid, Getafe have been in the top flight for the last eight seasons - finishing 13th last time out.

Getafe could cost up to €150m

The Marca report suggests that Getafe could be available for between €120m and €150m - mirroring the transfer fee Liverpool are about to pay for Florian Wirtz.

Only this time Liverpool would be getting an entire football club - with a new stadium coming down the line in 2027.

The current club president, Angel Torres, has vowed to step away once the Estadio Coliseum is fully redeveloped - allowing FSG to soon put their own man in charge.

There are advantages to being in LaLiga - and Getafe have a decent history of their own - reaching the Europa League on two occasions.

According to the report, John W Henry’s group are planning to use Getafe as a feeder club but also as a standalone asset.

Liverpool stars grew up in multi-ownership model

Liverpool can’t risk falling behind - particularly when the multi-club ownership model is being used for player development by others.

Current Liverpool stars Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai whose futures were shaped by being inside the multi-club model.
