Liverpool make decision over January deal for left-back

Liverpool have used the loan system once again this season in the case of several young and fringe players.

Admittedly it’s a mixed bag - with the likes of Harvey Elliott, James McConnell and Lewis Koumas enduring tough spells with their respective loan clubs.

All three could return to their parent club in January - with McConnell and Koumas tipped to pick up loan deals elsewhere for the second half of the campaign.

In the case of Elliott meanwhile he could make a breakthrough for Arne Slot’s first team in the latter stages of the season - given he is ineligible to represent a third club of the season following appearances for both Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Luke Chambers returns from injury

The club may also be tempted to seek deals for player who haven’t succeeded in making major impacts for the seniors this term - including Stefan Bajcetic and Rio Ngumoha.

But it appears that a loan spell can now be ruled out for their 21-year-old left-back Luke Chambers. A highly-regarded academy prospect, the defender has already appeared FOUR times in the first team - although not since the 2023/24 season.

In truth the England under-20 international has been struggling with injuries - being sent back from his previous loan spell at Wigan last season in order to nurse an injury.

Chambers was back on the field for the recent Liverpool under-21 friendly defeat to OGC Nice at the AXA Training Centre.

“Chambers came off the bench for the final half-hour to mark his first appearance since suffering a recurrence of a serious back injury in March,” a report from This Is Anfield reads.

No January loan deal for Luke Chambers

However it is not likely that Chambers will be getting first-team football elsewhere in the second half of the season according to the same report.

“The left-back, 21, was on loan at Wigan when he sustained the injury and has since focused on his recovery back at the AXA,” the report continues.

“While his quality and experience would no doubt interest a host of clubs in the January transfer window, the likelihood is that he will stay with the U21s for the remainder of the season to focus on his fitness.”

Chambers was in very good form for Wigan last season before suffering his injury. Liverpool will be hoping he can regain some of his form during the latter half of the campaign even if a first-team breakthrough still looks out of reach.
