Fabrizio Romano has confirmed a crazy move could be on the cards as a former Liverpool man - and Jurgen Klopp favourite - is in line to join Manchester City.

Liverpool and Manchester City have put on some of the most intense Premier League title races ever over the last eight years. Jurgen Klopp vs Pep Guardiola was as fierce a fight as it gets.

Of course, the Reds typically lost those races. Technically they lost all of them as their two title wins came without any race at all.

But no teams have ever pushed each other harder than Liverpool and City at their best. That's the only way a team could finish second on 97 points, after all.

Or 92 points, for that matter.

It's a legendary time for the Premier League - a period where the world's best, most consistent teams battled it out for the crown in English football. We may never see the likes again.

And so it feels a little crazy that one of the key Liverpool figures from that time is now closing in on a move to City.

Man City move for Pep Lijnders

Fabrizio Romano claims Pep Lijnders is in line to work under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Ridiculously, another option is former Liverpool centre-back Kolo Touré (though, admittedly, he's also an ex-City player).

It's Lijnders who stands out. The Dutchman was Klopp's no.2, effectively, and had a major impact on the Liverpool team.

So much so that he landed an impressive gig with Red Bull Salzburg upon leaving Liverpool. That role as head coach turned into a disaster, however, and now it appears he's back to being an assistant.

The fact he could jump to being Guardiola's is quite something, though. Lijnders, who played such a big role at Liverpool, could now be preparing to stop them from winning.

And linking up with the Reds' biggest rival in the league to do so. A move no one saw coming.

We'll see what happens from here and there's no suggestion that Lijnders has agreed to work for City or anything. But it's something that may well happen soon.
