Liverpool are enduring another miserable run.

Since 2026 began the Premier League champions have won only FOUR of their 12 top-flight matches.

Their last two matches have seen the Reds take only a point from fixtures against Wolves and Tottenham - two relegation candidates.

In between was a damaging Champions League last 16 first-leg defeat to Galatasaray - which the Anfield club will be hoping to overturn on Wednesday.

Head coach Arne Slot has come under sustained pressure from fans over the scale of Liverpool’s problems. Goodwill from last season’s epic 2024/25 Premier League title win has now evaporated and questions are being asked about results and performance.

It’s been reported that sporting director Richard Hughes will conduct an end-of-season audit into Slot’s performances. And that assessment could lead to a parting of the ways.

Liverpool’s latest setback saw fans pour out of the stadium before full-time and trusted club reporter James Pearce now suggests that perceptions of Slot have changed completely.

“How the landscape has shifted for Slot — from entering Anfield folklore in a blaze of glory to suddenly being under mounting pressure and criticism,” he writes in the Athletic.

“In a miserable season full of crushing setbacks this was arguably as bad as anything that’s been served up given the circumstances.

“What the hosts produced was a dismal, disjointed, error-strewn display.”

Pearce has been reluctant to criticise Slot of late despite Liverpool’s troubles - failing to defend their title and struggling to re-qualify for the Champions League.

And so for him to acknowledge the possibility of Slot being sacked is significant - all the more so as it comes following a visit to Anfield from FSG’s Liverpool chairman Tom Werner.

The exec jetted in from his US base for the Tottenham game - which ultimately was a damaging day for the head coach. Indeed Pearce is now stating that the countdown is on for the Dutchman’s Liverpool career.

And if he’s saying it we truly could be in the endgame.

“Liverpool chairman Tom Werner, who was over visiting from the US, was in the Anfield directors’ box on Sunday and won’t have enjoyed what he witnessed,” he writes.

“The biggest reason why Slot is haemorrhaging support among match-going fans is the stale brand of football Liverpool are playing.

“Slot hasn’t reached the point of no return. He could still turn this around but the clock is ticking.

“Liverpool can’t afford another shambles like this one.”

Liverpool face games against Everton in the derby and Champions League rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa before the end of the Premier League season.

Slot is running out of chances to save his Liverpool career. If they cannot get back into the Champions League via their league position then he really must win the biggest prize in European football to stand any chance of sustaining his job.
