FSG take Arne Slot sack decision

It’s been a difficult second season at Anfield for Arne Slot.

The Liverpool head coach got off to the best start possible - winning the Premier League in his first campaign in charge. Slot was initially an inspired appointment - taking over in 2024 from Jurgen Klopp - and delivering a 20th top-flight title.

But right now the 47-year-old is all at sea - in the Premier League in particular. Liverpool went into the international window on the back of their TENTH league defeat of the season.

Never mind a title defence, they are struggling just to win a place back in the Champions League via their league place.

Much was expected from this Liverpool team this season after Richard Hughes spent £450m in the summer transfer window. But a combination of injuries and a failure to gel has left Slot searching for solutions and he’s so far come up short.

Arne Slot linked with Liverpool exit

All of this has led to speculation that FSG may opt to make a coaching change either before the end of the season or else in summer.

It is reported that Slot would cost around £10m to sack - as he is under contract only for another season. But trusted club insider Paul Joyce in the Times has now confirmed what FSG intend to do over the beleaguered Dutchman.

Rather than jettisoning Slot - as might have happened at any other Prem club by now - it looks like the Boston-based owners are ready to stick by their head coach.

FSG to give Slot another chance

“There are some Premier League clubs, where the pain threshold is lower, who might have already swung the axe,” he writes.

“FSG remain steadfastly behind Slot and want him to emerge from the turbulence.

“While the final leg of the season feels important, FSG do not believe lightning simply struck last term. The prevailing view is that Slot was crucial to the league title and that the head coach with a track record of success has not just disappeared.

“If underlying issues are resolved, gaps in the squad ironed out, then FSG would expect the Dutchman to reassert himself.”

That sounds as though Slot will get another season at least - and the prospect of a new contract may once again come back on the agenda in summer.

Signings like Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Alexander Isak have been blighted by injuries this season. Slot will say he hasn’t been able to pick his “best” XI much this term but all that may change so long as he gets his stay of execution.
