The one overriding success story for the Liverpool season thus far has been the form of Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Premier League title-winning midfielder has stood up consistently when other teammates have been found wanting.

The 25-year-old has worked tirelessly - in his natural midfield position as well as right-back, defensive midfield and even right wing in Arne Slot’s new formation.

Szoboszlai has emerged as the Liverpool head coach’s MVP during a difficult second season in charge.

Hungarian captain Szoboszlai has answered every question his head coach has asked of him - even pitching in with five goals and five assists in all competitions.

It crowns a remarkable turnaround for the playmaker - who finished Jurgen Klopp’s final season out of the team and whose efforts early in the last campaign were queried by Slot.

LFC hit by Szoboszlai injury blow

There is no doubt that the £60m signing from RB Leipzig has upped his game however and Liverpool can’t live without him.

That’s why there was so much anguish caused when Szoboszlai hit the turf with only seven minutes to play against Brighton at the weekend.

Leading 2-0, Liverpool were attempting to see off a late wave of Brighton attacks. The Reds’ talisman was attempting to ride a sliding challenge from Kaoru Mitoma but endured an awkward landing.

He knew straight away something was amiss - pounding the turf before Slot saw fit to replace him after some futile on-field treatment.

Incredibly - the remainder of that game - seven minutes or so plus added time - were the ONLY minutes Szoboszlai has now missed across the 2025/26 campaign for the Reds in the Premier League, Champions League and Community Shield.

The only time he’s got a rest has been in the EFL Cup - and the Liverpool head coach must now contemplate doing without his most important player.

Slot hoping for the best over Szoboszlai

"And Dom, it was his ankle,” the Dutchman told the press afterwards.

“It didn't look great when I just saw him. But he has unbelievable mentality so let's hope for the best.”

That very much sounds like Slot will be hoping to patch up Szoboszlai before the weekend Premier League fixture against a crisis-hit Tottenham.

It may be a risk - considering it’s only a few days since the No10 suffered his knock - but the problem is that Liverpool can ill-afford to do without his influence.

Hungarian media suggests that the injury isn’t at this stage serious but Slot may well be counting the cost of an overreliance on Szoboszlai and a lack of midfield options elsewhere.

Is Szoboszlai being overworked?

Elliot Anderson and James Garner are the ONLY midfielders in the entire league who have played more than Szoboszlai thus far this term - and the Liverpool man would have matched Anderson’s total of 1440 minutes had he not needed replacing on Saturday.

Even the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi have been afforded the occasional few minutes off by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Szoboszlai by way of contrast has had to endure Slot’s lack of rotation. Bear in mind he’s also played every single minute for Hungary in all six of their FIFA World Cup qualification matches this season.

He is an extremely durable athlete and Liverpool will no doubt have been hoping that he would get his rest in any other form than an injury-enforced layoff.
