Liverpool are closing in on an exciting replacement.

Things are finally beginning to gather pace for Liverpool in the transfer market. Until now, it has been a frustrating and largely unproductive summer.

This could also be Richard Hughes' final transfer window at Anfield, with a move to Al Hilal seemingly on the horizon. That means his legacy is very much on the line. While he deserves credit for last summer's ambitious spending spree, those expensive arrivals also left the squad unbalanced — an issue that ultimately contributed to Arne Slot losing his job.

Now it is Andoni Iraola's turn to rebuild, but he has inherited a squad that looks even thinner than it did at the end of last season. Several key players have already departed, leaving Liverpool weaker in a number of important areas.

When the window opened, supporters expected marquee signings capable of replacing figures such as Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. Instead, with August approaching and the transfer deadline drawing closer, Victor Munoz remains the club's only arrival.

There has finally been movement in Liverpool's pursuit of Bradley Barcola, but signing a winger alone will not solve the club's problems.

The need for reinforcements extends across the pitch. Centre-back is perhaps the clearest example. At present, the only fit senior options are 18-year-olds Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, neither of whom has significant first-team experience. That is a huge gamble for a club hoping to compete at the highest level.

The issues do not stop there. Right-back remains another glaring weakness in the squad. Liverpool are still yet to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, leaving Iraola without a natural successor in one of the team's most important positions.

Then there is midfield, an area that initially appeared to be one of Liverpool's greatest strengths. That perception could change very quickly. Alexis Mac Allister continues to attract significant interest from Europe's biggest clubs, while talks over a new contract have stalled, raising fresh doubts about his long-term future at Anfield.

Curtis Jones is in an even more uncertain position. With just one year remaining on his contract, an exit looks increasingly likely unless Iraola can persuade the academy graduate that his future lies at Liverpool.

Even beyond those potential departures, there is a bigger issue that has lingered for years. Liverpool have never truly replaced Fabinho. Since his departure in 2023, the club have repeatedly searched for a long-term successor, pursuing targets such as Moises Caicedo and several others, but without success.

Ryan Gravenberch has done an admirable job when deployed as the deepest midfielder, yet there is still a legitimate debate over whether that is his best position. His strengths arguably lie further forward, where he can drive through midfield and influence attacks, rather than anchoring the side in front of the defence.

If Iraola wants to implement the aggressive, high-intensity style that has become his trademark, a specialist holding midfielder could prove essential.

That is why Liverpool remain firmly in the market for another midfielder. Adam Wharton has been consistently linked with a move to Anfield, while players such as Lamine Camara and Mamadou Sangare have also featured on the club's shortlist at various stages.

What's interesting is that Liverpool are also having a massive reshuffle in the U21 team. The club has recently announced the departure of Kyle Kelly on loan to Forest Green Rovers.

And they have just confirmed that a transfer has been agreed for Liverpool midfielder Tommy Piling to join Slovakian side MFK Zemplin Michalovce on a permanent deal.

This would be quite a transfer and it leaves Liverpool's midfield depth very thin in the U21 team.

But Liverpool are already closing in on a replacement for Piling. Anfield Watch reported exclusively that Patrik Farkas is expected to join Liverpool on a free transfer.

The negotiations are now closing in and the two parties are close to reaching an agreement.

In the process the talented Hungarian midfielder will be the replacement for Piling.
