It'll be controversial! Liverpool's eye bizarre new transfer

Liverpool have a new transfer plan in mind and it'll prove controversial. The Reds need to have a big think on this one.

Liverpool are weighing up their transfer plans for the January transfer window and beyond. Now's the key time - locking in who you want to push for and getting that due diligence done.

We're crossing our fingers that one such target is Lamine Camara, the AS Monaco midfielder who has started the campaign on fire. Liverpool could certainly use a player like that.

But he won't be the only target. Even in midfield. That's the area Liverpool are lightest and the one that they didn't address in 2026. In fact, they sold Curtis Jones without replacing him.

So we fully expect to see at least one signing, and potentially even in January.

The Kees Smit plan

TeamTalk reports that Liverpool are watching Kees Smit closely. This is far from the first link with Smit, who is one of the more in-demand players across Europe right now.

But we're not sure he's at all what Liverpool need and it's a move that could ultimately prove controversial. Smit is, like all of the squad's midfield options, an attack-first player.

And very attack-first. Smit is in the bottom 10 per cent of Eredivisie midfielders for share of the defensive workload. He's just not particularly active defensively - and that's something Liverpool desperately need right now.

Instead, Smit offers shots and passes and dribbles and creativity. His numbers are solid in that regard, especially for someone so young. But he essentially fits the description of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

He's more of the same at a time when Liverpool are crying out for balance in midfield. And that's before you entertain the discussion of where and when he would play - we're not sure you could have him next to another midfielder who doesn't offer too much in terms of defensive workload.

This is a problem we saw coming last season. Smit, as good as he is, exacerbates it.
