Liverpool were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City on Sunday.

The Premier League clash was held at Anfield and, even though Arne Slot's men managed to open the scoring, their defence fell short and failed to keep the Cityzens at bay.

Slot managed to name an almost full-strength team at the weekend with only Dominik Szoboszlai in the wrong position.

And, while some of Liverpool's first-team squad were impressive, the vast majority of their team looked like fish out of water.

Without Szoboszlai helping control the centre of the park, there was little to no creativity among Liverpool's ranks which was proven by the lack of attacking moves that they made.

Despite this, there was one player who's performance caught the eye of Gary Neville.

Dominik Szoboszlai leaves Gary Neville stunned

Even though Szoboszlai was Liverpool's only player who was used outside of his natural position, he was their best player by a country mile.

If fans didn't know that the Hungarian was a world-class midfielder, he wouldn't have looked out of place at right-back on Sunday.

Admittedly, his positioning was far from ideal with his defensive position being the cause of City's winner.

Despite this, his work rate, ability to tackle his opponents off the ball and his keen eye for a pass all make him a decent full-back.

His goal-scoring ability is also fairly solid with Neville sharing his thoughts on the midfielder's free-kick.

"I didn't think it would be as special as that! What a hit that was by Dominik Szoboszlai," he said on Sky Sports.

"Every time I watch Liverpool, he seems to be their best player. Liverpool got on top and Pep Guardiola slumped in his chair.

"He knew what was coming - he has seen it so many times before."

Dominik Szoboszlai can't continuously carry Liverpool on his back

It goes without saying that Szoboszlai's form this season has been a sight to behold.

The Hungarian has been one of the main reasons that Liverpool are still in contention for a Champions League finish.

Of course, they're still in the competition at the moment but, with the knockout rounds coming up, it's unclear what will happen.

Szoboszlai being in some of the best form of his life is obviously good news for Liverpool, but, the Reds can't expect him to keep his standards this high until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

This is where others such as Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and even Alexander Isak need to come in and save the day.

Otherwise, the Anfield outfit could end up without any silverware to their name and outside of the Premier League's top four spots which would be a massive fall from grace, especially since they only won the top flight title last term.
