Jacquet was being chased by a host of top English and European clubs - including Chelsea - but it was Richard Hughes who managed to get the deal over the line.

Liverpool win the race for Jeremy Jacquet

France under-21 centre-back Jacquet will move to the Premier League having firmly established his credentials in Ligue 1 over the last year or so.

Widely renowned as one of the best defenders in the world in his age group it is expected that Jacquet will compete for a first-team spot next season.

His presence will also help usher in a new era in Liverpool’s backline - alongside fellow arrivals Noah Adekoya, Mor Talla Ndiaye, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and of course Giovanni Leoni.

Liverpool are clearly seeking a new kind of profile in defence - with it now expected that Jacquet will become a leader in the position in the years ahead.

Liverpool to pay £51m upfront for Jacquet says Romano

He has signed a contract until 2031 - with an option for another year. Fabrizio Romano has now lifted the lid on the deal for Jacquet - with Rennes pocketing a fortune for one of their own homegrown talents.

It was initially reported that Liverpool would pay £55m for Jacquet with another £5m due in add-ons. In fact the Premier League champions have committed significantly MORE on Jacquet according to the Italian transfer market expert.

He puts the deal at €60m upfront - coming in at around £51m - with the increased add-ons of €12m (£10m) taking the deal higher than the £60m first reported.

Liverpool make €72m Jacquet bet

“OFFICIAL: Jeremy Jacquet joins Liverpool on €60m plus €12m add-ons deal from Rennes, contract until June 2031 plus option,” he wrote on X on February 2.

“LFC completed move yesterday and the French defender will join in the summer.”

It means Liverpool could eventually cough up €72m in total for Jacquet - and current exchange rates have that at around £62m.

Jacquet right now has got just over 30 first-team games for Rennes under his belt. So it’s clear Liverpool aren’t paying for his experience - but making a €72m bet that he fulfils his immense potential.
