Marc Guehi's transfer to Liverpool and it's ultimate collapse on the final day of the window is a saga that is not going to go away.

Just because the summer transfer window has ended, doesn't mean that the club's pursuit of the player is over. However, things are complicated now.

Crystal Palace have left things in a messy muddled mire. Their inability to find a replacement in the summer, Oliver Glasner's threats to walk away from the job if the club's chief Steve Parish sanctioned a move have made things difficult both for Guehi and Liverpool.

The England international had completed his medical and was getting ready to sign his new deal for the Reds when Palace pulled the plug out of nowhere.

For Guehi that was a difficult blow to take. Although for the player, he will back himself to get a move next summer and he'll still have his options open.

For Liverpool the matter is not that simple.

This summer they had beaten competition for Guehi's signature. They had done the hard-work and secured their man, even agreeing a transfer fee of ÂŁ35m with Crystal Palace.

The fact that Palace then changed their minds in the last minute is going to leave Liverpool feeling frustrated. The club is in a fortunate situation in the sense that they didn't necessarily need Guehi.

It's also why there have been reports recently that Liverpool do not intend to make a January move for the England international.

The fact is that by January, Liverpool could sign Guehi on a free transfer in six months time. Sure, there might be some competition for him but Guehi has proven to be a man of his word.

He'd already agreed a deal to sign for Liverpool. Surely that will take precedence when he makes a decision about his future after his contract has expired at Palace.

Yet at the same time, Liverpool's plans are not set in stone according to Fabrizio Romano. After all, six months is a very long time in football.

A lot of things can change in that period. Six months is a lifetime in this sport. Let's backtrack to six months ago, back in February or March, who would have thought Liverpool's starting line-up could include both Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak?

Not many could have envisaged Richard Hughes making such big moves. But in the end, that is what ultimately happened.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that Liverpool's plans could change with Guehi depending on their situation.

“You can imagine in the season in three, four months a lot of things can change,” Romano said.

“There could be injuries, there could be tactical problems, there could be needs for the coach. But as of today, the intention of Liverpool is to go for Marc Guehi as a free agent, not to go for him in the January window.”

“If something happens in the next months, Liverpool can decide to revisit their decision and get Guehi in January by negotiating with Palace,” Romano adds. “But Liverpool are not happy with what happened on deadline day and they are planning for Guehi as a target on a free transfer.

“If in the next months something will happen at Liverpool or Arne Slot, or anyone at the club will decide okay let’s go for Guehi immediately, January can still be the case. But for now the intention is for a free transfer in 2026.”
