€100m fee AGREED as Liverpool line up Argentine prodigy
One of the biggest talents in Argentina has agreed a contract with a major release clause after Liverpool showed interest. The Reds have a major decision to make.
Liverpool remain on the lookout for their future up top. Specifically, the player who can eventually replace Mo Salah on their right flank.
It’s notable that there’s essentially no one close to the first-team squad who could take on that role. Yes, it’s one of the most difficult possible succession stories in football - but Liverpool really have no one.
Ben Doak did look like he was groomed for it but then Liverpool sold him. Harvey Elliott, too, has left the club after once appearing to be the next right-winger at Anfield.
The Reds will need to enter the market for someone, then. But exactly what kind of signing they make depends on how long they expect Salah to stick around.
If he’s off in 2026, Liverpool need a superstar. If he’s off in 2027 - or beyond - then a young player who could become a superstar may be the move.
The latter is a very interesting one, of course, and the Reds might have an option lined up there.
Liverpool like Ian Subiabre
Liverpool have been consistently linked with Ian Subiabre over 2025. The teenager is one of the brightest prospects in Argentinian football - maybe the brightest.
The links kicked off again in the last few weeks, too, as Subiabre’s reputation continues to grow. But how are River Plate reacting to that?
El Intransigente explains that they’ve now tied down Subiabre to a contract until 2028 with a €100m release clause. The teenager was eager to sign the deal as, as River see it, he’s focused on his development above all right now.
And so the Argentinians aren’t too worried right now. They’re described as ‘not concerned’, even if they know that a club like Liverpool can change ‘the landscape’ in an instant.
That’s what we’re waiting for here, then. Liverpool need to decide whether Subiabre is the young gem they want to invest in and if he is, then a deal is there to be done - River can’t avoid that.
Now, we can’t imagine he’d actually go for €100m at this stage but it’s a clause that massively strengthens River’s negotiating power. Half of that? We could see it as that’s the way South American fees are progressing.
One to watch, then. Liverpool may see a lot of value in gambling on Subiabre in order to bring him in as a future homegrown player.
But they certainly won’t get him on the cheap and without a fight.
