Arne Slot HINTS at late January Liverpool transfer
Arne Slot seems to have opened the door for a possible late January move before the window shuts.
How many times have we been in this positions? Liverpool fans know this feeling all too well. We're just a few days left until the transfer window closes and our squad is looking weak and depleted.
Yet, it doesn't look like the club is going to make a move. Richard Hughes had the perfect opportunity earlier on in the window. Marc Guehi was right there and available.
Crystal Palace were ready to sell him and Liverpool had already come so close to signing him. It was all made to be the perfect transfer, especially because Liverpool are so short of depth in the centre-back department.
But alas, Guehi ended up at Man City and Liverpool are left scratching their heads. With days left in the window and Joe Gomez suffering another injury, as well as Jeremie Frimpong being ruled out for a few weeks, it's now or never.
Arne Slot was quizzed about the possibility of a signing before the window shuts in his press conference building up Liverpool's fixture against Newcastle United. Normally, if there wasn't anything in the works, the head-coach would deny and rule out making a signing.
Jurgen Klopp and Slot have both done this numerous times. But Slot's answer did not rule out Liverpool making a move.
In fact, he opened the door to one, hinting that behind closed doors Liverpool are still ready to make a move.
"Yeah, you know the answer. It is that if we think we have a player who can help us and think it is possible, we will do so. They are conversations that don't take place in this room," Slot said.
It's a very mysterious answer. But in the past, Slot has ruled out deals. The fact that he didn't could just be a hint as Fabrizio Romano has suggested as well that Liverpool are exploring options.
Let's not get carried away. Knowing Liverpool's business at this late on in the window, we don't expect a world-beater.
It will probably be an Arthur Melo, Ben Davies, Steven Caulker or Ozan Kabak type of signing.
But at the end of the day beggars can't be choosers. All Liverpool need right now is depth in their defensive department.
Having an actual defender playing in the right-back or the right-sided centre-back role over someone like Wataru Endo or Ryan Gravenberch is certainly better.
We don't want to have to rely on Dominik Szoboszlai playing in those roles. It would be far better for him and everyone else to be playing their actual position.
If Liverpool can find a solution before Monday, then that is exciting. Slot's comments certainly hint towards a late deal being in the works behind closed doors.
