Virgil van Dijk is clear: He wants Liverpool to CANCEL talks
Virgil van Dijk has spoken out on Liverpool transfer talks. He simply doesn't want it to happen.
Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Tottenham Hotspur about selling Andy Robertson. That’s the line in every major outlet, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that talks are still happening.
Robertson’s contract expires in the summer and it doesn’t look like he’s going to get a new one. Instead, Spurs hope to sign him a few months early as they try to rescue their season.
Liverpool appear to be open to a deal, receiving a fee for a player who would otherwise leave for nothing. And, of course, getting his wages off the books for the rest of the campaign.
Only, it’s a deal that Liverpool’s captain doesn’t appear to be in favour of. And he’s not the only one.
Virgil van Dijk on Andy Robertson
Virgil van Dijk was asked over the weekend what he thought about Robertson potentially leaving in the coming days. It's clear he's not in favour of the deal.
“I speak to him every day," said Van Dijk, per Lewis Steele. "He’s my vice-captain.
"Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay but whatever happens, let’s see.”
We imagined that Liverpool would change their mind here. Saturday's display against Bournemouth didn't go well but notably, Milos Kerkez was brought off at half-time for Robertson.
Kerkez had struggled against his former team, while it's believed he is currently lacking fitness. Having Robertson there as backup was vital and he instantly brought some much-needed solidity.
We're not sure why Liverpool would give that up. There is no replacement outside of bringing Kostas Tsimikas back from his loan - something that's only possible because AS Roma don't think he's good enough.
The club looks set to weaken their squad in order to save a little bit of money. A bizarre decision and one neither Van Dijk nor the fans appear to be in favour of.
