The next Steven Gerrard WILL be returning to Liverpool
There's a new Steven Gerrard on the block and it's inevitable that he will return to Liverpool.
We don't need to tell you just how good the Reds' former captain was. Gerrard could do anything on the football pitch. He was the master of midfield in his prime and undoubtedly one of the best players to ever grace the Premier League.
It was unfortunate he was never able to play in a truly 'great' Liverpool side. For most of his career he had to carry the Reds on his back, and it's not like he didn't have success. Istanbul will be forever ingrained in the club's history.
He's without a shadow of a doubt the best midfielder Liverpool have ever produced from the club's academy. And the best midfielder to have ever played for Liverpool.
Generations of young midfielders have aspired to be him for decades since he emerged. So far to no avail. Curtis Jones has perhaps come the closest.
But there's another fantastic midfielder who might just finally be able to step into Gerrard's shoes in the future.
Right now there's a real lack of scouse presence in the Liverpool squad. Curtis Jones is holding down the fort after a number of academy graduates left the club in the summer.
Jones himself has been linked with a move to Tottenham and with his contract expiring in 2027, who knows what the future holds for him.
It's difficult to predict what the future holds for anyone at Liverpool right now. What is looking obvious is that for Arne Slot it's now a matter of when not if he is sacked.
Liverpool's performances are simply not sustainable. There is no way for him to remain at the club in the long nor short-term.
The likeliest candidate to replace him is Xabi Alonso. Sky Sports have hinted at it recently and he is available and with a proven track-record of getting the best out of an underperforming side in Bayer Leverkusen, and most importantly getting the best out of Florian Wirtz.
If Alonso is appointed, then the likelihood of Liverpool bringing back their next Steven Gerrard becomes even likelier.
We're talking about Tyler Morton. He's been in sensational form for Lyon since leaving the Reds in the summer. Morton has become a lynchpin in midfield, and he's been able to make an impact in front of goal as well.
Notably, he scored a header by making a typical Gerrard run into the box earlier in the season. Now against Metz at the weekend, Morton scored a stunning volley that was Gerrard esque while also spraying long passes and diagonal switches across the pitch - again something that the former Reds captain also loved doing.
Morton's ability was always recognised by Alonso, who wanted him at Bayer Leverkusen. So, if he's appointed the Lyon midfielder's return becomes even likelier.
But even if it's not Alonso and someone else, at this rate Morton is just destined to come back to Anfield.
Liverpool only inserted a sell-on clause when they agreed a move for him to leave the club and join Lyon.
That shouldn't matter too much. A sell-on clause will still give the Reds an advantage should they wish to re-sign him in the future. Given the need for more ready-made club-trained players, Morton just makes the most sense, especially because Liverpool are missing that vertical passing ability in midfield.
Morton is the real deal, and his destiny still belongs at Anfield.
