Sudden Liverpool deal opens door to RECORD breaking agreement
Liverpool are to strike a sudden deal that no one saw coming. It opens the door to a record-breaking agreement.
It now seems incredibly likely that Liverpool will sell Andy Robertson before the end of his contract. News broke on Friday that Tottenham Hotspur are working on a deal to sign the Scot.
The Athletic broke that story and it's continued to move quickly. An official bid is in, per Fabrizio Romano, and it may well be that Robertson is a Spurs player by the time you're reading this.
It's a controversial move to say the least. Liverpool surely won't bag much of a fee here and Robertson's wages aren't so enormous that he can't provide value as cover.
But it seems the club view this as a sensible deal, even if it leaves the squad incredibly light on defenders. Perhaps there's another angle here, though - one with a view to the summer.
From Andy Robertson to Micky van de Ven?
Liverpool are essentially doing Spurs a bit of a favour here. Assuming they're not demanding a massive fee for him, anyway.
And in doing so, they open talks with a club they hope to do more business with. They've been consistently linked with a move for Micky van de Ven - someone who seems to want out of the club.
Talksport are the latest, claiming Spurs want a world-record fee for a defender in order to sell him. They also name Liverpool as an interested party.
Well, this is the kind of deal that opens a door to that one. It gets Spurs on side, improves relations and establishes a conversation between the two on positive terms.
We imagine that Liverpool do want Van de Ven. We also imagine they don't want to pay anything like a record-breaking fee for him.
This Robertson deal could be a fine way of talking them down from that price. Liverpool give them a player they want when there's no real need to, and perhaps get a more realistic price for Van de Ven in return.
