Liverpool may be on the brink of another record signing. The stars are certainly aligning.

Are Liverpool going to break another transfer record? Things may be heading in that direction as they attempt to find the answer to their centre-back situation.

The Reds are linked with some incredibly high-profile players, with Caughtoffside linking Liverpool with Alessandro Bastoni this week. They claim Inter could want around €100m for their centre-back.

That would be a record-breaking deal for Liverpool, who spent £75m on Virgil van Dijk back in 2018. That remains the most they've ever spent on a defender.

The club has already officially secured Jérémy Jacquet from Stade Rennais for £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons. The 20-year-old is currently finishing the season in France on loan and will officially join Arne Slot’s squad in July 2026. He is viewed as the long-term successor to the current first-choice pairing.

The Contract Deadlock

The most immediate risk involves Ibrahima Konaté. His contract is set to expire in June 2026, meaning he is currently in the final months of his deal. While Arne Slot confirmed on March 2 that negotiations are ongoing, Konaté has not yet signed an extension and is being heavily linked with Real Madrid and Inter Milan on a free transfer.

Veteran and Youth Status

Virgil van Dijk: The captain signed a two-year extension in April 2025, committing him to the club until June 2027.

Joe Gomez: Currently under contract until June 2027. He has recently been utilized as a right-back due to injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley.

Jarell Quansah: Now at Bayer Leverkusen following a £35 million move in 2025. Reports indicate Liverpool holds a €60 million (£52.5m) buy-back clause that becomes active in 2027, though speculation exists that the club could try to accelerate this for a 2026 return.

Analysis

It was reported last week that Liverpool are indeed lining up a 'major' move for a new centre-back. In fact, the only real question appears to be whether the Reds need one or not.

That decision lies with Ibrahima Konate. There's no question that a new star must arrive if he leaves as there's no strong senior backup.

Liverpool won't want to rely on Leoni and Jacquet as first-choice options. Gomez, of course, can't stay fit - and may leave himself.

The club must act on the idea that Konate won't renew, even if he eventually does. That means weighing up deals like those for Bastoni, just in case they're scrambling for a new first-choice defender.

A record-breaking move would certainly be the best way to secure their short-term future in the position. And as things stand, that's exactly what they'll have to do.
