Richard Hughes is doing it again with £80m BARGAIN transfer
Richard Hughes might be ready to pull off another bargain transfer for just £80m.
All you want and need from your sporting director is to get the best possible players on the market and make your team stronger.
Richard Hughes did that on paper in his massive summer overhaul. We aren't seeing the fruits of his labour just yet but that will come with time.
The players need to get used to their new environment, and Arne Slot needs to adjust his system in order to suit the players at his disposal.
It's quite simple as that. Unfortunately the frustrating thing for Liverpool fans is all this takes time. You're never going to change things overnight, and that is going to mean a run of poor results like the one we are experiencing right now.
This isn't the only issue of course.
Hughes embarked on his rebuild in the summer but he didn't complete it. Liverpool are still in the process of it.
One of the next challenges will be to build the defence. There have been some suggestions that with Marc Guehi's arrival Liverpool's plans would have been to switch to a back three, which would have utilised the strength of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
This never happened because Guehi wasn't signed. He may yet still join the club but Liverpool need more than just one defender. Especially if Ibrahima Konate doesn't extend his expiring deal come the end of the season.
That will allow him to leave as a free agent, and it will leave Liverpool very short, especially considering Joe Gomez also doesn't seem to have a long-term future at the club.
So ideally Liverpool should be adding another centre-back in the summer. Especially if the plan is to play with a back three.
Now one player who has been heavily linked with a move is Alessandro Bastoni. The Inter Milan centre-back is regarded as one of the best in the world in his position right now.
It was thanks to him that the Serie A side reached the Champions League final, and at 26-years-old he is very much in his prime years.
Signing him right now would make a lot of sense for Liverpool. Especially because he is a centre-back who is comfortable playing as part of a back three and therefore could offer that option as well.
Not to mention given his leadership at the back and his experience he's someone who could comfortably replace Virgil van Dijk, who is not getting any younger.
The only concern is how much he would cost. Well, according to Football Insider, Inter Milan would want £80m. Yes you heard that right. Only £80m.
For a player of Bastoni's experience and quality, that is an absolute bargain. And if Hughes can do that, he will have done it again.
