Liverpool's record signing to cost EXTRA £60m
Liverpool are going to need another £60m if they're to get their record signing. At least, that's what Arne Slot suggests.
Liverpool spent enormously over the summer - more than they've ever spent in their history. The biggest spend was on Alexander Isak, of course, who cost a new British record fee.
The Reds pushed hard to sign the player. Newcastle United didn't want to sell at all and were essentially forced into it in the end by the player's refusal to even train.
Liverpool were patient, waiting for the entire length of the window before signing Isak. It was a tortuous saga but one that ultimately gave the Reds what they wanted.
However, it appears that things aren't all well. Isak has not hit the ground running, struggling for form or even real involvement in games - he had fewer than half the number of touches Alisson Becker managed against Sunderland in midweek.
And it sounds as though Arne Slot wants to spend more if we're to actually see the best of Isak.
Arne Slot on Alexander Isak
"The main difference for [Isak] is that we are facing a low block many times," said Slot this week, per the Guardian. "It is not that it never happened at Newcastle but not as much, I think.
"This season the league has changed, we see so many more low blocks than last season. But I see this not only against us, I see this in many games. It makes it harder for him compared to his time at Newcastle but I think it is also him adjusting to his teammates and his teammates adjusting to him.
"But it is obvious and clear that we have not the profile of [Newcastle’s] Jacob Murphy, for example, available at this moment at this time.”
So the insinuation there is that if we're to see the £130m player that Liverpool signed, the Reds will need to find the right kind of player to put around him. That kind of signing would cost £60m, if we're going by the price of Antoine Semenyo, for instance.
That's a blow, isn't it? If you spend that much on a player, you like to think he'd be good enough to adapt to the stars you already boast - stars who won the Premier League last season.
It appears Liverpool need to find the right players in order to get the most out of Isak, though. And if they're not at the club, they'll need to buy them.
