Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate has a new plan as he comes to the end of his contract. It's a big one.

Ibrahima Konate's contract will currently expire on July 1st. Liverpool have known that for some time, of course, and continue to work hard on getting him to renew it.

After all, losing a player of his standing for no transfer fee is essentially a disaster. Liverpool lost Trent Alexander-Arnold for peanuts last year, of course, as he ran his contract down to join Real Madrid.

Only the FIFA Club World Cup allowed them to get some sort of fee - around £10m - as Madrid were desperate to have him for the tournament. There will be no such chance with Konate.

And Real Madrid are linked once again. It does now sounds as though they won't make a move for the Frenchman, with reports suggesting they've outright told Liverpool it won't happen.

So what doe that mean for Konate? Bayern Munich don't appear to be an option as they close in on a renewal for Dayot Upamecano and there's no longer much noise around Paris Saint-Germain.

Ibrahima Konate's contract plan

Marca reports that Konate now intends to remain with Liverpool and sign a new contract. However, that's not the be-all and end-all.

The defender wants to be one of the absolute best-paid centre-backs in the Premier League. Now, it's not entirely clear what that means but we have some clues.

Virgil van Dijk is the best-paid at around £350k per week (Capology). Marc Guehi just made headlines on joining Manchester City as he'll be earning 'close' to £300k (the Athletic).

So is that the range he's after? We're not entirely sure Liverpool would go for that but at the same time, giving him that kind of money is going to be cheaper than signing a new elite centre-back.

Konate won't require a transfer fee to play the next six years at Anfield, after all. Someone like Nico Schlotterbeck would.

There is half a chance that Konate ends up on mega-money, then. We're still not certain that Liverpool will pay up but after missing out on Guehi, they may not have much of a choice.
