Liverpool transfer to be triggered by £7m deal
Liverpool are waiting on a £7m deal before a transfer can go through. The Reds are low on time, however.
It looks like Andy Robertson might still leave Liverpool this month. We're only days away from the January transfer window closing but a deal with Tottenham Hotspur has been agreed.
Robertson's contract expires in the summer, of course. The fact that Liverpool are entertaining the idea of a sale at all certainly suggests he won't be getting a new one - and the player is on board with moving to Spurs.
Now, it's not a move that's gone down well with everyone. Liverpool are light in defence as it is and selling one of the two most experienced options when you really don't have to is a controversial choice.
So why hasn't it gone through, then? Well, Liverpool appear to be waiting on a £7m deal elsewhere to go through.
The Roma factor
Liverpool will only let Robertson go if they can get Kostas Tsimikas back from his loan at AS Roma, per the Athletic. The Greek left-back is struggling in Italy and they’re happy to let him leave after failing to hold down a first-team spot.
However, they’ll only green-light that if they can get their own replacement. They’re currently searching for a new left-back and Sky Sports claim they made a £7m approach for Wolves’ David Moller Wolfe.
That approach was rejected, however. Roma have moved onto other targets which would suggest they’ve set aside that £7m for a left-back this window.
With days to go, they may struggle to find an adequate one for that money. It’s all that holds up Robertson’s deal, though, with Roma successfully finding an option ready to set off a chain reaction.
The moment they find that left-back, Tsimikas will return to Anfield. Robertson could then leave for Spurs - and leave Liverpool weaker for it.
