Liverpool have reportedly positioned a Barcelona star for a big-money transfer. Richard Hughes is hard at work once again.

Liverpool came out of the summer transfer window short on what they wanted. That’s despite spending over £400m and green-lighting over £200m in sales.

It was a summer like no other at Anfield, their transfer record broken twice as they rebuilt a title-winning squad. And yet, it wasn’t perfect.

Marc Guehi was supposed to join from Crystal Palace right at the deadline. He’d been a target of sorts all summer long, but it was never clear whether the Eagles would be willing to sell.

With a couple of days to go, it looked as though they would be. That was a false alarm, however - the deal was cancelled with minutes to go.

But it at least means we know what Liverpool are after in 2026. They want a new centre-back and it appears Guehi isn’t the only one they have in mind.

Liverpool target Ronald Araujo

Football Insider is the latest outlet to claim Liverpool are weighing up a move for Barcelona's Ronald Araujo. It's not an easy one, however.

It's suggested here that Guehi is certainly still their no.1 target but increased competition as he enters the final six months of his contract makes things difficult. Liverpool have the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City to compete with now.

And so spending a lot of money on someone like Araujo suddenly makes sense. For one, Liverpool will need to replace Ibrahima Konate as things stand - his contract is also expiring.

Finding a new starting centre-back - and one who will likely need to play in a post-Virgil van Dijk team - is no easy task. Liverpool, then, have taken the first steps towards a move for Araujo, just in case that's the direction they want to go in.

It would cost a fortune, however. Barcelona will likely only sell the Uruguayan if they're strapped for cash, though that's quite a common situation over there. They'd demand a large price even if they did decide to sell, however.

And so if Araujo is available, Liverpool may ultimately pay the necessary fee. Again, it largely depends on Guehi not choosing Anfield as his next home.
