Marc Guehi transfer stance REVEALED ahead of January window
Liverpool are still in hot pursuit of Marc Guehi and the transfer market reopens in just a few days.
It cannot be emphasised enough how important it is that Liverpool sign a new centre-back as soon as possible and the Crystal Palace captain is still at the top of Richard Hughes' shortlist of targets.
The only problem is convincing the England international to join the Reds before the end of the season, which is not a move in his best interest, since he'd likely be financially better off by waiting.
Furthermore, it's unlikely that Palace are going to sanction a move for him before he's contractually allowed to go, and manager Oliver Glasner put up quite the fight back to keep him back in August.
Is a move for Guehi possible in January?
In short, it doesn't like as though a move for Guehi is on the cards until the summer, when it could prove difficult to convince him to join Liverpool rather than spreading his wings elsewhere.
Of course, the Reds were ridiculously close to getting him to pen a deal in the summer, and you'd expect the club to have the advantage in the race to sign him, but his situation is shrouded in doubt.
According to Sami Mokbel at BBC Sport, the amount of interest in Guehi is 'intensifying' and the 'plan to see out the final six months of his contract remains', but it's far more complex below the surface.
Speaking on Football Focus, Mokbel said: "He's got so many options in the summer. You've got clubs in Europe [like] Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid [and] Inter Milan, all registering varying degrees of interest in Marc Guehi in recent weeks and when you come to the end of the season you'll have Liverpool back in the mix [and] Manchester City will be back in the mix.
"He is leaving, but I expect that situation to continue until the summer."
There is also the the possibility of Guehi signing a pre-agreement when January 1 arrives, but only clubs outside of England could agree such a deal.
Although if Guehi's intention is to ignore all potential offers and sit down when the season formally ends, the Reds will have no guarantees that their ideal centre-back will actually complete the transfer.
In an alternative report from Sacha Tavolieri, it's claimed that Barcelona are close to ruling out an approach for Guehi as their offer is going to be lower than those from English clubs. That would keep Liverpool in the driving seat for the 26-year-old, although the competition will still be fierce.
Liverpool will hope that they can get a deal for Guehi over the line, whether it be in the winter or at the end of the season.
