Liverpool have reportedly taken a step towards signing one of the hottest prospects in Brazilian football. Can they finally get one over the line?

Liverpool have long looked at the elite talents in Brazilian football and tried to sign them. However, a lot of them end up elsewhere - usually Real Madrid.

Rodrygo Goes was very close to joining Liverpool, in fact, only for Santos to decide his value might rise after another year. It did, and so did the interest in him.

Endrick was another that Liverpool strongly considered early on. He just kept getting better as a teenager, though, and eventually signed for Real Madrid in a record-breaking deal.

History is littered with others that got away from Liverpool. The Reds know full well that it’s a fantastic country for finding elite talents - they’re just not quite as willing to gamble enormous amount as some clubs are.

But now there’s one that has caught the eye once again and Liverpool are reportedly taking steps towards a transfer. Maybe this is the one that finally gets over the line?

Liverpool move forward on Gabriel Mec

Gabriel Mec is a 17-year-old midfielder for Gremio who has seriously caught the eye over the last year. Globo claims Chelsea actually offered a deal up to €24m to sign the wonderkid but things stalled - it now appears that deal is off, at least for now.

Instead, journalist Kaliel Dorneles tells his YouTube channel that Liverpool are interested in getting a deal done. They're currently watching him at the Under 17 World Cup and like what they see - enough that they've asked for more information about his contract situation.

That hasn't quite moved into an offer for Mec but it's a step forward. The suggestion is that £17m could get a deal done with Gremio but we imagine a lot of that would need to be guaranteed.

There is a clause of £43m in his contract but we can't imagine Liverpool would want to get particularly close to that for a 17-year-old. At the same time, there's enormous potential here to land a player who would eventually become homegrown at Anfield.

The U17 World Cup essentially forces clubs to do something to sign Mec as he's proving to be one of the standout talents. Liverpool appear to have recognised that and have made their first steps.
