Liverpool may strike a surprise deal soon and at a remarkably low offer. But it feels like enough to get a transfer done.

News broke this week that Atlético Madrid are in the market for Andy Robertson. The Scot's contract situation is a complex one that opens the door to a sale.

Robertson's deal expires in one year and because he's now beyond 30, Liverpool are hesitant to renew it. As always, though, they're hesitant to renew it on a high wage.

There's no question that Liverpool would be open to extending Robertson's stay on dramatically reduced salary. It's just doubtful that he'd accept that given he can almost certainly find another club that doesn't have the same concerns about players over 30.

Atlético are one of those clubs. They want a new left-back and Robertson does feel like a perfect fit both in playing style and experience.

So how likely is a deal here?

Liverpool could accept Robertson offer

The Times reports that Atlético have put around £5m on the table to sign Robertson. That puts Liverpool in a strange position.

On the one hand, that's nowhere near enough money for someone who was a starting player in Liverpool's title-winning team last season. Even with one just one year left, you'd get that kind of value from keeping him around.

The 'problem' is that Liverpool would also save on Robertson's wages if they let him go. They almost certainly won't get value for there as they fully intend for Milos Kerkez to be their starting left-back by the end of the campaign.

So while the initial fee is small, overall Liverpool stand to benefit substantially from letting Robertson leave. Atlético know this, of course - hence the low-ball offer.

But this is a surprise one nonetheless. No one thought Robertson would be off this summer and the topic simply never came up through the farewells after the title win.

We can't help but feel that this is a deal that benefits everyone, however. Robertson gets his future sorted at a top club, Atlético get the left-back they want, and Liverpool can move forward with a bit more financial flexibility.
