Ibrahima Konate could LEAVE Liverpool after surprise transfer call
Liverpool have made a massive call on Ibrahima Konate, according to reports. It's not one we saw coming.
Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of the season and it's put Liverpool in a difficult position. They've been trying to renew that deal over around a year now - but with no luck.
Konate has certainly been linked with moves elsewhere. Real Madrid were long thought to be his most probable destination but they supposedly pulled out of talks not too long ago.
So where does that leave the defender? He doesn't want to sign at Liverpool for the money they're offering - but can he actually get what he wants elsewhere?
We're not so sure and Konate is running out of options. Perhaps Paris Saint-Germain come back in for him, while some English clubs may be willing in the summer.
We won't really know until next month when the contract has under six months to run. Non-English clubs can formally talk to Konate and offer pre-contracts from that point.
And maybe they can do even more than that.
Ibrahima Konate's future
L’Interista, which is part of the TuttoMercatoWeb network, claims Inter are interested in signing Konate. They’re looking at the Frenchman as well as Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi - as most clubs hunting new centre-backs are.
But the interesting titbit here is that Liverpool would sell Konate next month for €15m. They don’t want to lose him for nothing and would accept a cut-price fee.
Now, we don’t believe that’s true. Liverpool are short at the back already after Giovanni Leoni’s injury and letting another centre-back go would be a risk not worth taking.
Not unless the club believe they can sign two new centre-backs in January. That feels very unrealistic, though.
As things stand, five extra months of Konate would be worth €15m as long as Liverpool are competing for something. That would change if they completely drop out of the top-four race but we don’t believe they will.
We don’t doubt that clubs will try to sign Konate on the cheap. They’d be mad not to. But it would take more than €15m to get Liverpool to budge and depends on them signing replacements.
