Things have been disappointing on the pitch recently for Liverpool, as a result many supporters have turned their focus to the transfer market.

Despite spending over £400 million overhauling the squad in the summer, the Reds’ Premier League title defence has been nothing short of woeful so far.

Many of the Anfield faithful were hopeful that the January transfer window represented an opportunity for Arne Slot to turn things around, but the champions have been quiet in the market so far.

Having already missed out on long-time targets Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, Liverpool cannot afford to lose another priority target to a rival, but history could be about to repeat itself.

Chelsea enter race for Liverpool-shortlisted defender

One of Liverpool’s main priorities in the transfer market over the last few years has been to secure highly rated young talents.

The acquisitions of Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni are perfect examples of this strategy, and the Reds are looking to repeat a trick with Sheffield Wednesday starlet Yisa Alao.

The 17-year-old left-back was the subject of a rejected bid from the Premier League champions earlier in the month, but Liverpool are not the only team chasing the young star.

Alao, who has made five appearances for the Owls, was also the subject of a bid from Manchester United early in the window.

The Daily Mail are now reporting that Chelsea have joined the race for the defender, with the Blues reportedly outbidding both Liverpool and Manchester United.

Sheffield Wednesday are facing an uncertain future after going into administration in October, with a takeover currently being finalised.

Any fee for Alao will be a substantial one for the Championship strugglers and could be crucial for the Yorkshire side.

Laurie Whitwell, of The Athletic, also claimed on Wednesday evening that Chelsea were close to completing a deal, but that negotiations were still ongoing.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will get a deal over the line, but it would come as no surprise to see Liverpool and United match the Blues’ offer if Sheffield Wednesday do decide to sanction a sale.

Having already agreed deals for several exciting academy talents this winter, Alao could be the next to make the move to Merseyside.
